2012 m3 Display Cluster Went OFF?

Correct me if I did something I do not know here BUT earlier this afternoon when I started the M3 the display cluster did not lit. Hence, I couldn't tell which gear I was in, not to mention the time, temp etc... I turned the engine off and on, played and pressed all knobs (signal/computer/ cruise control knobs) to no avail. Needless to say I drove 5miles to a store pissed considering the car's 4 months old and acting already! After about 10mintues at the store I went back to the car, started the engine and it's back normally lit again! WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?!? Anyone had this issue? Did I press some button that I do not know of?

Totally not normal... did you receive any errors at all?

I would say bring it to the dealer, but be prepared for the typical "well, we can't re-create the issue, so if it happens again bring it over". Just saying...

Totally no errors came out. It was weird.
"well, we can't re-create the issue, so if it happens again bring it over" thought of that too.

OP might be a little overreacting. Display off? That might be a little annoying... but the rest, really? Knowing the gear? is it MT or DCT? with MT you should know the gear you in, DCT will do all the work for you. Knowing the time? How about radio display, phone, wrist watch??

There are lights on the DCT lever, that's all you need. Stick the thing in full auto, use the lights to confirm if you must, and off you go. Not a big deal.

Was the tachometer working? That's all you really need...

Never had that happen to me but if they can't recreate it you're just going to have to wait until it happens again. Keep your phone handy and snap a picture to show the service department when/if it happens again...

You should definitely take it in for service. This waqy, even if they don't find a problem, you are on the record. Do this each time if craps out temporarily and this will probably enable you to have it replaced when you are out of warranty for up to a year.

Not to sound condescending, but certain polarized sun glasses will 'blank' out radio displays and maybe the DCT/info portion of the display?
