M3's MPG

ok so we've probably discussed this a hundred times but some people are saying that the mpg for the new m3 should be better than last yr's model, true?

Not sure where you are getting your numbers from but these are the official BMW numbers for a Euro spec car with EU type standards. There is no reason to believe that the US mpg figures will not show similar improvements.

E46 M3 / E92 M3 / % advantage

Urban:..........17.8 /17.9 / 0.6%
Extra-urban:..8.4 / 9.2 / 9.5%
Composite:....11.9 /12.4 / 4.2%

(all efficieny figures in ltr / 100 km)

Since the figures are ltr/100km, it's not an improvement, it's a decline!
But there are two different stages of the old M3 engine. The M3 engine has been adapted to the EU4 standard (european emission standard) in 2006 because it's not allowed any more to sell new cars without that standard in Europe. With the adapation to the EU4 standard the consumption of the engine did raise. Compared to that engine the new V8 really has an improvement in gas mileage:

E46 M3 (EU3)/ E46 M3 (EU4)/ E92 M3 / % disadvantage comp. EU3 / % advantage compared with EU4

Urban:..........17.8 / 20.4 / 17.9 / 0.6% / 12%
Extra-urban:..8.4 / 9.3 / 9.2 / 9.5% / 1%
Composite:....11.9 / 13.4 / 12.4 / 4.2% / 7,5%

Best regards, south

Well I screwed that one pretty bad, thanks for the clarification/correction. So used to mpg comapred to ltr / 100 km (obviously). In the end, however, like you said, apples to apples the new V8 is more efficient and that is pretty amazing.

How about a forward firing grapple hook so you can get towed by semi's down the interstate?

How about the fact a 415 HP Porche GT3 gets 17/24. Or that a 505 HP Z06 gets 16/26. Technology fortunately makes engines faster AND more fuel efficient (if that is one of the goals in designing the engine).

Ferrari 4.3 liter V8 in the F430 = 11/16 -- obviously NOT a concern in the designof that 483 HP materpiece!!

What subject isn't a dead horse? Nothing going on with this or any other M3 related forum for weeks. We are all suffering and trying to make do without even the slightest new info to shake a stick at. What has been the average number of visitors on this forum lately...less than 20? If you want the newest info, check out the thread on the hood vents.

So it looks like that's where BMW gets their claim of an 8% improvement with the e92M3 over the E46

Therefore there may not be an improvement for US customers
