VIR Lap Times M3 vs. 47 other cars

These are lap times at Virginia International Raceway.
The M3 was up there with some pretty exotic machinery and placed ahead of many cars that are much more expensive.

Most of the cars were driven by Car and Driver Magazine test drivers.

There is obviously a margin for error since the cars were not all tested on the same day and of course there is more to a great car than lap times but I thought it was an interesting comparison.

C63 did a good job, trying to keep up with the M3 on a road course.

IS-F just got spanked again on another road course test.

Don't let the 335I guys see this as they will analyze it to death trying to figure out if 5 seconds is really worth 15 grand. Because as we all know that is the only difference.

Note the M3's time from the 08 Lightning Lap comparo was a DCT car run in auto because it was before the software updates fixing the downshift problem. May have cost it a little bit of time.

What surprised me was that the Shelby GT 500 was up there with the Porsche 997 Turbo and the M3. I would guess that of the three the M3 was the easiest to drive fast and the best balanced but that is speculation on my part.

Keep in mind that these results are for VIR and do not necessarily imdicate that the cars would finish in the same order on another track.

VIR is a good indication of how a car will perform on the road because there are some long straights, some tight turns and several elevation changes. On this type of track acceleration and braking performance (along with handling and cornering) are very important.

On a track lime Lime Rock (my home track) which in the "Classic"" configurtion is more of a "momentum" track a good deal of the course can be taken flat out. There is little threshold braking and acceleration is not as important. I don't have lap time comparisons for Lime Rock but it would be an interesting comparison.

Here is a video of lap of VIR in a supercharged Miata.

And these are the lap times for the starting grid at VIR for the 2007 Rolex Grand American Road Racing Series.

Lap of LRP in my '08M3 on stock tires in my sig. Certainly could have trimmed a bit off my lap times if I turned off the DSC, but first time out with the car I was VERY impressed with its abilities.
I am not surprised with the results from VIR...the M3 is a potent track weapon.
Be good,
TomK

In comparing the M3's slower time to the CTS-V, C&D stated it this way:

"But the real difference was the M3's automated manual gearbox, which didn't want to downshift on command, and our best lap was achieved while driving the car in pure automatic mode."

As some of you know, C&D went on to say in the February issue where it pitted the M3 DCT against the 997 C2 PDK the following:

"The M3 M DCT simply does everything well except tow a hot dog stand. It may even be the second-best car in the world after the M3 manual."

3 of the top 5 DP cars are Pontiac powered. Hmmm. I believe that those were the LS1 cars and not the LS2 but no 100% sure.

Awsome track!
