Just bought a new commuter..

Been thinking all winter about doing this, today was the perfect day to go for a "test drive".. Came home with a new commuter.. (Work is 7 miles away from home) I could see going for long rides on the weekend as well.

I didn't really know much about bikes at all before today. Learned a bunch. Bikes are like cars, tons of stuff you can buy for them, all of which can get stupid expensive. And it adds up incredibly fast..

"Mods" so far:
Helmet
Shoes/Pedals
Water Bottle/Holder
Pouch to hold keys, cell phone, ID, etc.
Back blinking LED's
I think next time I am near the bike shop I will pick up an LCD readout with speed, distance, etc. That'd be good to know.

Looking forward to riding. It was a blast today testing the bike out. Can't wait for the warmer weather, and furthur pursuing getting in top shape..

Here's some pics (I included some with it's big e90 brother):

I see you already got "Time Attacks" wheels! j/k

With these gas prices, I would be riding a bike too.

I hear if you switch to beans, you get better fuel economy.

Nice bike...might have to get me one as well.

EDIT: good going with the pedals and shoes. also might want to think about getting bar ends and extension for the brakes.

Thanks..

Yeah the guy did mention that. For the commute he said it wouldn't be a big deal, but once I start doing longer rides it would be good to have that option to change up hand position.. I'll let you know how it goes once I start really commuting with it. Right now it is way too damn cold..

Off to practice clipping in and out of the pedals... Where's my hockey shoulder pads??

Nice new 08 ride!! If you are looking for a cycling computer. Take a look at the Trek Incite 9i for a good basic cpu. You can get it either wired version meaning, there is a cable that runs down the fork for the pickup of the sensor on the wheel or go wireless.
Also don't forget a tail light and head light if you are riding before dawn or after dusk. Also a tail light will help during day time if you get a bright one.

Have fun and ride safe!

Hey nice ride, why'd you get the shoes/pedals? I'm so afraid of not being able to unclick in bad situations and toppling over...

And I hope that thing has snow tires...

Because it's fancy. And Josh is a fancy boy.

Also because you get better/consistent power using shoes that are clipped onto the pedal. Better torque!

And also, when you are mountain biking, it's nice to be attached to the bike so you can hop the entire bike over jumps etc.

Thanks for the advice. The more I think about it, the more I want a computer. I want to see performance progress.. I will look at that model when I go back to the bike shop.. Wireless vs. wired, any preference between the two? I'm guessing it'd be nice to not have a wire, is it just more expensive, or are there cons such as loss of signal?

I bought a blinking LED setup for the back. I will use that all the time, even in the daytime to get drivers attention. Headlight I didn't look at yet, we'll see how it goes..

You know me already??

I spent a good half hour in an interior door frame before my hockey game tonight practicing with those. I have a feeling the first few days still might be a little rough...

But yeah, much better consistency, you can push/pull on both sides, not just push, so you're a lot more efficient. Also your foot moves around a lot less. I tried the trainer in the shop with and without them, even over half hour or so I could tell they would really make a difference. I ended up getting them, it's something that once you get used to I know will make a huge difference..

Thanks for the comments everyone!! Can't wait to get out there.

Disclaimer: I am a complete bike noob.. Don't take my word on anything. I am starting from scratch..

If by bike friendly means they'll drive over you to get by.. then sure, Boston is bike friendly..

I biked to work two summers while living in Santa Clara during college. They had nice bike lanes every where you went, wish it was the same out here.. That was awesome..
