if I can afford a M3 instead of a 135, I will top up my own fluids with my purchased 10w60 as like now, always topping up the 135i myself.

thats not the point...anyone of us can obviously offord $20 for a bottle. TO ME (and most others) its about principal. You say that now that if you could afford an M3, you wouldnt mind topping off yourself. But trust me, you wouldn't want to.

Also, this thread is about the fact that some dealers top you off, and others (Autohaus) completely deny you of ANY top offs.

Agree with slammed on this one... not to mention the fact that your dealership should be topping up your 135i for free as well, they did so on my 325i so not sure why they wouldn't on your car.

Only $20? You must be driving pretty slow then.

Oil top offs

In the US, even though we get 4 years of scheduled maintenance included, dealers are not reimbursed for oil top offs. It is a consumable that is not covered. Many dealers will do so for their customers, especially if you bought the car there.

That being said, it's a petty thing to complain about and expect for free. Compare how much you spend on gas to your oil bill to put it in perspective.

I dont think its covered here either - I usually just buy a litre to keep in the car so I have it just in case - cant be bothered to go to a dealer to try to get a top up since I rarely pass a BMW dealership - just a convienence thing. I did however have a good experience once as I did pass buy a dealership when the add oil message appeared. My intention was just to buy a litre, they asked me if my oil was low - it was late in the day - they apologized profusely for not having a tech to put it in my car for me and just gave me a bottle and I was on my way - nice touch considering I didnt buy my car there or service it there.

Kudos to those that get the free top up though - never hurts to ask!

Your right, its not covered by everyone. But MOST do it. Maranello never used to say no to me either, the last time they did. But Town & Country seems to be the place to go if your in that area. Luckily there are 3-4 dealers VERY close to me at all times so its easy for me. To be honest, I dont expect it for free, I mean it doesnt make much sense for it to be free because GregW was correct...the dealership is not reimbursed for the free oil they use to top off cars. But..since some do...why not take advantage and get free oil? If I offered you a $20 bill, would you say no?

can you guys just go into the dealerships with your M3 and ask them to give you a bottle or half bottle, or a couple bottles of oil instead, telling them you will top it up yourself?? lol..

This weekend on the way to the cottage, got the low oil warning, stopped in at Durham BMW... they wouldnt do a no-charge top-up so I bought the liter bottle from them.

They claim BMW canada doesn't compensate them for the oil so they cant do it, but if i was a Durham BMW customer they would have comped me for it.

Funny, my last top up at BMW toronto they didnt even ask me who I was LOL... I guess the small town guys are on a tighter budget?
