Feedback from Geneva
I don't know about you guys, but I have been to Geneva today! I was tempted to call the thread "news from Geneva", but actually there is nothing really new...
So when I talked to one of the ///M guys I asked a lot of questions, but most of the time his answer was "I can't say". Anyway, here are the things he confirmed: - 420 hp (but no torque or weight yet) - carbon roof - manual geabox at beginning (but no comments on SMG or DSG) - launch will be this year (and he didn't deny when I said September...) - "concept" is not really a concept: the real M3 will look exacly like the one in Geneva And: There will be a press release just after Geneva (i.e. after March 18) with all details. I know, there is not much new here, but this was all I could get out of the ///M guy... |

Thanks for trying and keeping us updated. Even though there wasn't much info, the intent was there. Well done.

Good to hear the HP number firmed up. And where are all the guys who said this was as hybrid??
The guy confirmed it will look identical. So much for all those guys trying to be CSL snoobs. |

Lets hope this imminent press release clears up the transmission issuse. The SMG/DSG uncertainty is driving me crazy and is one of the main specs I want clarified ASAP.

the fact that they COULD confirm that there would be a manual gearbox at the beginning but COULD NOT confirm whether SMG or DSG would be available is a pretty potent omission. given that bmw, certainly has the technology to deliver an smg transmission in time for debut, and also that bmw has been ABLE TO CONFIRM SMG debut availability for most every M in recent times, m6, m5, z4m, etc etc.... bmw is making a very strong implication that they will be proffering a DSG transmission rather than an SMG transmission, by refusing to comment on the availability of either for debut.

So it seems SMG is on its last legs then. Lets hope DSG is available from debut or at the latest 3-4 months after

Changing gear isn't all about quickness, but the interaction. Manual FTW!

Good thread
Thanks for the real time update. I'll be there myself in a week. A+ for effort and for grilling the guys at the booth. I am hoping 420 hp means 42X hp!
DonM3: I am so with you on this darn tranny uncertaintyl esquire: Excellent reasoning on the tranny issue! I think you are right. As easy as it would be to throw an SMG III on it they wasnt to launch with DSG or 6M only. Man, I sure hope I don't have to pass on my allocation to wait for somethign other than 6M (such 1900s technology, ugh). Last edited by swamp2; 03-12-2007 at 01:02 AM.. |

I think it's pretty obvious by now that you won't have SMG at all. DSG something, but no more SMG.
If the aforementioned rumors are true, I just hope that we get at least 420 HP in the states. Last edited by devo; 03-12-2007 at 10:17 AM.. |
