Interested in putting the powerpulley system on my 08 m3 e90. On dinnans website they dont recommend them because they could cause several problems.... Has anyone have any knowledge on this?

Power pulley issues
Thanks guys but what im trying to figure out is if these pulleys cause problems down the road? Dinnan claims on their website that its not worth doing .... Does anyone have any experience with the pulleys? Is the 10hp worth it? Im leaning to stay away from them.

i contemplated it and decided against. i have used pulleys on other vehicles and have had various charging issues after the install.

The pulleys are actually a very safe mod, they are very conservative and you will have no problem with cooling or charging. Some companies offer a race pulley and these may cause problems with cars with aftermarket audio equipment.
BTW, it has been shown that on the track underdrive pullies in some cases actually can help cooling. I remember Brad @ Evosport wrote up a piece about this. Don't have it off the top though. Dave

On the home page click dinan university and scroll down until you see "the dangers of power pulleys and understanding harmonic damper" its written by steve dinnan himself. Pretty interesting. Definetly makes u think before modifying shit

I personally like to find power in other areas. Power pulleys will reduce the speed of the water pump, which can increase coolant temps rather than lower them. On the track is where 10whp makes a big difference, and with the increased engine temps, I definitely wouldnt recommend the pulley. Instead of looking for 10whp on the track, I would be trying to drop weight.
Steve Dinan was talking about removing the harmonic damper, which is really where the primary danger is incurred. Side note, on Evosports website they refered to the pulleys as "dampened" which is the incorrect term. The correct term is "damped", and Im a little disappointed that a professional shop doesnt know the difference. |

Thanks scorpiont. I agree with u. Its too risky for something that im probably never going to use for its intended purposes anyway. Just a waste of money. And it could potentially cost me more money down the road. Im just gonna stick with the afe intake and prolly gintani exhaust and call it a day kid

OP: I originally had a Rogue Pulley on my '08 E90 M3 and drove for 15 thousand miles, never a problem.
Around town, I really didn't notice the 8-10 HP. I tracked my car and the total effect of Pulley, MS Air Filter and Exhaust was then evident VS. Stock M3's but only at high RPM. Good Luck!

There is nothing wrong with pulleys and they have proven considerable gains across all parts of the powerband - most manufacturers remain within safe limits for both the track and street.

I've had my MS pulley since around 2k miles, about 7400 now, no issues
TBH I don't feel much of a power pump as this car gains power in a linear way but i"m happy with it :P

The article talks about as to why you shouldn't replace Harmonic Dampers. Plus, Dinan makes some of the best if not THE best aftermarket parts.

I have the MS pulley set. From what I heard, their version doenst effect the ac cooling Down time as much as the other brands. My car is my DD and I do want performance but not hardcore enough to let my ac cooling suffer for it. That is why I chose the MS ones

The pulleys for our cars add a little torque and HP and they are safe. The downside is that if you drive the car only occasionally and only on short drives, you will need to buy a trickle charger. Also, if you ever throw a belt, it's not the stock replacement size. Not likely but possible. I keep the 2 replacement belts in my trunk, just in case. If it's your daily driver you'll be fine - no issues.

Everyone that has noticed the bit about harmonic balancer replacement is correct. That is bad for the engine. Most power pulleys back in the day, such as E36, did replace it. I've seem a lot of oil pump drive nuts eventually walk off and cars loose oil pressure due to this. I have also seen several different S65 power pulleys and they do not replace the balancer, simply the accessory drive pulleys. Some kits do have pulleys that are slightly smaller than others that can result in over heating on the track. So read up on the pulley set you choose before buying. There is some good power to be gained, especially for the price. Good bang for the buck...

They work well. Great bang for the buck. Problems were with 4cyls. Active Autowerke wouldn't offer it if there was problems, they stand behind everything they manufacture.

I was considering a dinan pulley kit but after reading Steve Dinan's article I'm having second thoughts.
