Why no LSD, but instead DSC?
I have been seriously considering getting an E90 towards the end of the year, but have been sadden by the fact that BMW has decided to use DSC as a form of limited slip.
Now I know that most of the time, for most drivers, the DSC operates well. But, as you all know, this is a drivers machine, and if wanting to push to the limits, the DSC is working against us. It would seem like in track conditions with the DSC off, it is possible that one wheel will just spin. And for those times when you want to lay some rubber on the road, all you'll get is some peg-legging single mark. Not what I would expect from such a capable machine. Help me understand, as I want a pure sports car/sedan, and the thought of not being able to "lite em both up" at will is dissappointing. I just remember when I was in high-school with my old Mustang GT, and being able to roast the hides on that thing. Although, immature and probably wouldn't do it again, it still was damn fun. Everything else in the car seems perfect, just this one little part that bothers me. Cheers!!! |

on the plus side, it has independent rear suspension which your mustang did not have
but really, you're right it's a cost cutting measure that I also do not approve of, maybe make the sport pack more expensive and include it in sport pack |

Your reasoning is true re dsc vs. proper lsd.
However, most (I'd surmise 99.9%) drivers won't push the car to 10/10ths that would need an lsd. Guess it's just BMW's way of saving some money on their non-M cars since the e46 series. |

Personally, I like to turn off my DSC and drop a little LSD and then go for a spirited drive! The car handles so well, I can even avoid most of the flying purple elephants!

Led Zep...your posts always bring back great memories of dodging deerostriches crossing the road!
I've almost talked myself into looking at an older M3 (although generally out of my pricerange), a G, or heaven forbid a rotary. I was not impressed with the RX8 when they first came out, but surely someone has developed a decent turbo package that works well with that car. |

With certain cars, some LSD types can induce understeer and hurt turn in at lower speeds and higher tire slip angles.
I owned a E36 328 and in many around town driving conditions it was more fun to drive than my E36 M3 because of this characteristic. LSDs can put more power down effectively, but sometimes at with a small cost in handling feel. If you're not going to be turning this into a track machine, don't worry about it. -Peter |

You don't need a limited slip differential. All ya have to do is put the car in the DTC mode which will allow you to roast the tires coming out of a corner and hang the tail end out, but the computer will still step in and intercede if you hang it out to far. Trust me, I've done it before. You can still have your two nice strips of black coming off your back tires...

Thanks for all the replies guys. If you look at the thread that show the different videos:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90 you can see that in one, it lays a weak single streak burnout. Now in a following one, you can see that it lays a pair. Question: What were the specific traction control settings for each situation. From what Redfire explains, one would think that you would need to put it in DTC only mode to get the pair of marks. And on the single streak one...is all modes off? I know this is kind of a weak topic, but at least it is confirming my expectations that there is atleast some sort of two wheel differential lockup going on if one wants. BTW, that video page has some great clips! |

Not sure how this plays into the equation. But I owned an e46 before my current e90. One side effect of the non-LSD is that the passenger rear tire wears much faster than the drivers rear. Trust me I did no burnouts in this car. This combined with the staggered tires resulted in me getting new rear tires (which by the way are even more expensive because of the run flat) more frequently than would have been the case with LSD and a non-staggered setup. I always ended up getting two new tires because of the one worn out one.
