Actually they do look radically different. Bottom line is, if you have loved this body style for years, buy it and don't think twice. On the other hand if you are considering it just because you believe it to be monetarily "to good to pass up", than I would leave it for someone else. People get to wrapped up in the whole "it cost more therefore it's better" bit. It may be better on paper, but does it bring you more pleasure, this should be the deciding factor.

I am not a big fan of the 996 look, either. I doubt I would take a 996 TT over an M3. A GT3? Probably.

However a 993 TT or TT-S? Bye bye BMW, that is one of the best looking cars Porsche has ever made.

Yep, one of the best cars in the world, an old 911 is still an old 911, nothing but a time machine can change that, so you are wrong IMO.

No not tail happy, b/c its AWD and I have to drive with traction off everywhere to really have fun in it. By saying the M3 is more "precise" I'm saying that its 'turn in' is much better. When you enter a fast, but tight turn (plenty of these in Austin) the M3's front end is planted on the road, where I've found the 996TT's to slightly understeer (which infuriates me of course). A good side of the 996TT is that in the rain (and we have had a lot of that in Houston lately) the thing is always planted. It was pooring the other night and most drivers were on the freeway going 40mph, but I had the Turbo pegged on 85 and didn't feel any instance of slip. The 996TT is great for 4wheel drift in the wet as well, very controllable in this regard.

Completely subjective, all I know is you are not going to find an old 911 with an 8400 rpm V8, DCT, or EDC. The M3 is much more fun and balanced to me than older, tail happy 911's. The 996 GT3 isn't more fun, at least not to me, it is just the outdated GT3 just like the E46 M3 is the outdated M3.

Earlier than 996 Porsches were a bit of a handful, not that the latest ones are that great either but the 993 especially the powerful Turbo needs some respect.

Apart from that they are a great car.

The vast majority of cars styled in the 90's are ugly to me, this one included. They all look cheap - no body lines. Everything looks it's made from dough.

(You bring up a great point about converting to RWD that I've never even thought about. While I'm nowhere near that point, I wonder what impact that would have on the car's other systems like ABS and traction control.) For less than $2G for an ECU reflash the engine will put out 525HP and 557 ft.lb. of torque, since the car has the X50 power package from the factory. As 94JZA80 pointed out, there has been a ton of R&D done on this software, so I'm not as worried about the engine going boom, like all of those S4s that were getting chipped in the late '90s, after they first came out. I'm still going to keep my BMW as a daily driver, and might pick up a used E92 M3 in a year or two to replace it. I'll just use the Porsche when I'm looking to get a little silly, and drive out of the city. Thanks for your help guys. The guys on the Porsche message boards are EXTREMELY knowledgable, but those sites get far less traffic, and aren't as pollished as this one. I'm sure I'll be stopping in here from time to time to see what's going on.
