Engine Malfunction ! Dealer Blames aftermarket Alarm/radar

3K for parts and labor and your car still needs to be towed ! Passport 9500ci was going to be my next Mod but not so sure now. Good luck

Don't let this issue sway you from a radar detector.

The lemon law pertains to persistant issues (multiple trips to the dealer) for warranted problems. If this is the first visit, you're nowhere near lemon law, especially if they say the problem is caused by an aftermarket part.

If anything, this would fall under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

But I'm not a lawyer, so I'd advise getting advice from one if this is going to go much farther.

First ask if the alarm company will go to the dealer and perform the work. Then you need to make sure everything up to this point is written down on the RO. Make sure they note on there that they want you to un install and why.
This will cover your ass later.
You could also ask the dealer if they will remove the aftermarket unit for you. If they will it might be better off if you let them. Your at a point that you just need to have the car diagnosed and fixed. Then decide later on who is at fault.

If its aftermarkets fault then pay up, and then go after aftermarket company.
If its manufacturers fault then demand that you dont pay a dime even for the removal of parts, also demand that the aftermarket parts be put back on the car at their expense.

Honestly given they had to tap the onboard computer for these things, don't you think the timing is suspect for this issue to pop up after you got this stuff installed? I would just pay the dealer their hourly rate to figure out the problem and than you will know. Worth the out of pocket cost for diagnostics, atleast it would be for me. The opportunity cost of lost time, work and hassle seems to be much greater than 100 bucks an hour for labor cost or whatnot

A few years back I had a similar experience with aftermarket equipment in a VW Passat. A supposedly reputable shop installed an audio amplifier, a few days latter the car was showing the low tire warning light. Next day, the FOB an two power windows stop working. When I took it to the dealer, the engine malfunction light turned on and the car started to misfire. The problem was very simple, the amplifier was not properly grounded

The latest standing in this nightmare is that the Dealer was told by BMW to continue (investigate) in finding the issue.
Not sure if they are into fixing it or looking further to blame the aftermarket install...
They just recently they told me that 2 grounds that go to the ECU where giving out false (?voltage?) not sure exactly what is faulty on it.

But when I visit last the tech was very busy tracing my aftermarket Radar and alarm wires.

I was also told that one half of the cylinder block is dead as of now... They think the ECU is to blame for that. But they also think the ECU gets bad power somehow.

They also mentioned that they want to put another new M3 next to mine to compare Voltage measurements.

It has been over 2 weeks now. Still no end in sight. They work more inside the Car then under the hood.

The aftermarket place is willing to Skype and talk over the phone. Did even come down and checked their wiring...

Don't even know if the dealer would let them work on it. in their facility.

BMW paid for all repairs... all aftermarket equipment was removed by BMW (And after all was removed and fixed ) the same problem appeared 1 week later. (Car broke down again)
BMW fixed it again and placed a note on my account that I am no longer eligible for the extended warranty. and that all repairs need to be approved now by BMW. All electrical problems that could be caused by the aftermarket install are now no longer under warranty.
The Dealership (That I no longer go to) threw me under the bus. My lease is up in 4 months. The nightmare will be over soon.
