headlight indicator

Anyone else think the parking lamp/low beam indicator on the dash is ridiculous? i could understand if it came on when the headlights activated in automatic mode. is it necessary if i just turn the headlights on? gee, i wondered why the road was illuminated.. good thing i have a dash notification! maybe a moon-roof open light will be in the 09. at least make the stupid thing orange so it isnt distracting.

just bored and have mild ocd (..must ..not ..take ..dash ..apart ..yet..)

I don't have an issue with it either.

Doesn't bother me. Activate the rear fogs and you'll get yet another indicator, but that one is probably actually useful.

Cut a piece of black electrician's tape and tape it to the clear cover in front of the light. Same way to fix an old blinking VCR 12:00

It's only on the M3 (and M5/6 I guess) because the tach is always illuminated, even with no headlights on. So BMW might have thought that it's necessary to have such an indicator since you can't tell by the tach illumination.

@Jason
A little green inidicator that lights up when the headlights are on.

Best regards, south

I hate the green indicator that signals that my fogs are on. I was actually just thinking about it on the drive home this morning...

Definitely OCD, not that there's anything wrong with that. Headlight-on indicator is present in many makes and models. I remember my first car, 1990 honda accord had one, as well as the B5 Audi A4, S4, etc...

actually i think it's necessary. sometimes i cant tell what's turned on, i look at the indicator and know... what's the big deal?

why are u looking at ur dash, shouldnt u be paying attention to traffic?

agreed

I agree its annoying and not necessary. You can just look at the green light next to the knob and see that its on.

it must be a us spec thing? because i only know the green light next to the A position on the headlight switch that tells if the headlights are on

It's an M3 thing, even in Europe.

Personally, I like this feature. I always drive with the headlight switch in "auto" mode. Did the same in my E46 convertible. In my E46 it was difficult to tell whether the automatic headlight feature was activated when ambient conditions were just on the verge of being dark. Like, for example, during a heavy rain shower with dark clouds overhead. I'd have to crane my neck to the left (while driving) to spot the teeny weeny illuminated green dot next to the 'A' symbol on the headlight switch. If it was illuminated, the headlights were on... if it was NOT illuminated, the headlights were off, and I'd have to switch them on manually. At least now, in my E93 M3 determining whether or not the headlights are on during conditions like this will be a lot easier.
