Front under bumper carpeted extensions?

What are the solid black carpeted extensions that reside where the old style plastic guard would be which are located behind the aero wing of the stock front bumper cover? Is something housed inside these? Seems like the under body air flow would be disrupted with these things.

I'm sure they are there intentionally to reduce lift (create downforce) on the front end and regulate the airflow under the body of the car at speed. I don't know anything about them being carpeted though.

They surely are carpeted. I could almost swear BMW did this so that when they get scraped (I scraped mine once on a curb....never again) it makes them more prone to rip the surface rather than yank it out.

This piece is my only complaint about the car height. Seems no one and I mean no one can explain to me what they are there for. One of my German friends seems to think that they are some how attached to the front air damns (where the air comes in) and some how feed up to the engine. Who knows, I'm sure that someone will post the answer. The winter will be hell on the material, they will constantly be pushing snow.
