Does the service load matter? 98Y vs. 94Y?

I'm looking for some new PS2 rears. I see different sites have the proper size, 265/35/19. However some have 98Y, some have 94Y, etc.

I think the stock are 98Y.

Is this a factor when buying tires?

What else is there to look for other than the size itself?

You may notice a difference in side wall stiffness. The lower load rating will yield a more compliant ride. Depends on your amount of track use and type of driving mostly.

Ok, got it. I have a set of 18" I use for track. So the 19's are used for DD plus the occasional weekend drive with the local groups.

I guess I wouldnt mind something a little more foregiving. The 19's seem to be a bit rough compared to the 18's.

I'll resurrect this one for some peace of mind.

Found a nail in one of my rear tires (stock 19" ps2s) and had to source two new ones in a hurry. Tire rack was out of stock so ended up going through a local tire guy.

We were so desperate to find ps2s in 265/35/19 locally that we forget to check the details on the ones we did find. Turns out they are the ps2 n2 originally intended to fit a Porsche Boxster. Same specs as the m3 oem tires save for the load rating. Oem is 98y, the ones I got are 94y.

So, is there any practical safety concern with running a lower than oem load rating? I do some spirited daily driving but never drive on the track. Ill also admit to the fact that although I like to think I drive fast, I rarely, if ever, bump up against the car's performance limit.

Bister is lighter than M3 no?

I would check with dealer or Ben at TireRack.

Have not seen any problems from putting 94Y on the M3. 94 load index carries 1477 lbs per tire, which should be all the weight bearing ability you need unless you are loading the car beyond its normal capacity.

At the margins, you may see some reduction in handling balance due to the mix between the two different versions.

Good to know. Thank you.

Given my lack of driving experience at the limit, I'm guessing that my lack of skills would be a more determinant factor in how she handles at the edge than the difference in tire version!
