1200 mi service done @300 mi (and wheres the diff change?)

Hey guys,

I've searched some of the previous posts about early 1200 mi services but mine seems, well excessively early. I had my car in for some other stuff and when the SA punched in the VIN, that service came up as "recommended". I asked they don't do it, but they went ahead and did it anyway.. *sigh* so much for listening to me. I'm still going to change the oil again -- probably at 5-6k. Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone thinks that's a bad thing..

The other question I had was on the service printout they don't explicitly list the diff fluid being changed. The oil, oil filter, and some coolant is listed though. When I asked about it, the SA told me that it's part of the "run in check" on the printout. There's a line linted as "oil change" which he claims is the diff flush. Normally I'm used to seeing an itemized breakdown of qty, part #, description, etc but not on this. Is this normal? I know I'm being a bit paranoid, but I don't want to start running the car hard w/out knowing the diff fluid has been flushed.

Regardless if the breakin service was done early or not, you should still follow break-in procedure by mileage. Just because you have had the service done doesn't mean you are good to let 'er rip. (This assuming you were planning on following breakin procedure in the first place. Some don't).
I had mine done at 6 hundred something miles. It was in for something else and I live 3 hours away so they asked if I wanted them to do it. Seemed like a good idea under the circumstances since they had the car for a couple of days anyway, waiting for a part, and otherwise I would basically have to drive it home then turn around and drive it back a few days later. But they had to get special permission from BMWNA to do it that early. Yours being done that early without special circumstances and without permission from BMWNA doesn't sound right. In any case, on mine they did change the diff oil as expected. Don't remember what the paperwork said.
I, like you plan to, changed my own oil and filter at ~6000 miles. Just had my second service done (13700). A few track days and a few autoX days and it hasn't used a drop of oil. No problems.

Mine too. I remember checking the part number to make sure they used the correct fluid.

Mine too. I don't remember what the printout said but I don't think that "oil change" means differential fluid flush. What would they put for oil change then? That dealership appears to be shady.

Yeah...that's what I thought. All my previous M cars had listed the diff oil PN in there. I will call up BMWNA in a few days after my service records have been uploaded to them and discuss it with them. Worse comes to worse, I'll just pay out of pocket to have it changed out.

When I had my 1200 mile service performed, the differential service was listed under "Engine Oil Service". And it listed the differential fluid part number (83-22-1-470-080), and at the end of that Job number, it said "DIFF SVC DONE".

When you inquire about the diff change be careful that the part number above isn't what they quote.I believe that is the old diff fluid.Make sure they give you the new fluid with additive. I believe the one with the additive that gets rid of the grinding and clanking sounds ends in -853.

More than likely they will use the 080 fluid on the diff. service since all dealers stock it and it's way cheaper than the 853 fluid, which many dealers don't stock due to the cost.

What am I missing here? How is 300 miles in any way close to the 1200 mile service requirement? 1200 miles is 1200 miles plus or minus some change. Quit taking it to these bozos.

Okay, so after some pushing they faxed me over a second sheet that breaks down the "run in check". The service for the diff has the part # 63-22-1-467-993 Differential oil: 832512 which looks like it's the 1 lt charge out # for the 080 fluid according to this post http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79150
