This post is misleading and I'm sorry I'm an idiot. The first year of the 997 gt3 is 2006.

Guys, the steering in the new 991 is really not all that bad. At first it may feel a little dull and uninspiring but the more you drive it the more it grows on you. I can say one thing for sure, it's no where near as good as the steering in the 997 but it is on par with the m3's steering in terms of feel alone. I still believe the m3 has the advantage in terms of steering accuracy and transitional maneuvers over the new 911.

very good review. I was invited to the 991 launch at my local Pcar dealer, drove the 991S and absolutely loved it. With some caveats...the engine is definitely making more power down low and revved to its 7500rpm redline. However, the engine just didn't feel as "racy" as the S65. The car I drove had the PSE and it sounded great, but not as nice as a S65 and the intake roar from the individual throttle bodies was missing. Handling wise I couldn't tell you as we weren't allowed to canyon blast. The EPAS did seem to dull the otherwise exemplary feel of the older 997 cars on the 991.

Would I buy one..heck yes if my finances can ever recover from the housing mess, but I didn't feel it was that much of a step up over my 2011 M3 ZCP car. I would wait a few years and find a garage queen with low mileage for $20k off MSRP. I don't think I would ever buy a new PCar again, I would go used. My 997.1S felt lethargic compared to my E92 M3.

I truly believe the S65 M3 is going to go down as a classic, the only V8 M3 ever.

For the record I am new GT-R owner who also owns two BMWs (a 135i and a 335xi). I just sold my 2010 M3 to make room for the GT-R and am still fond of the engine, just not the 6MT transmission. A car enthusiast is a car enthusiast regardless of whether one currently owns the model of interest on an internet forum. Many people who are current M3 owners have lurked on M3Post for years before becoming owners themselves. Did the rest of us try to belittle them or tell them they have no business here? As someone else already pointed out, many GT-R owners actually have more experience and knowledge about the M3 than ones who claims we don't belong here.

Went for a little drive with mates on the weekend... was behind the 991 with PSE for a lot of the drive. It sounded amazing especially on throttle overrun and downshifts (PDK).

Although the 997 began life in 2005, the first year of the 997 GT3 was 2007. They made a small run in 2008 then skipped 2009. 2010 was the first 997.2, again smaller run 2011. No 2012.

The M-DCT works better on road, but the PDK (Cayman R one) could stand longer than the M-DCT at tracks, not sure about the 991's though.

I love that roar. I step on the gas pedal every time I get a chance to hear the roar resonate, in tunnels, parking lots, and under bridges; and I only have the stock exhaust. People with Akras and the like must love it even more.

I originally wanted a new 991 C2S, but went for a used 997.2 Carrera GTS. It just felt like it had more soul and more like what a 911 should feel like.

I remember reading a few threads on rennlist where people chose the GTS and/or didn't see the need to upgrade for similar reasons.

Ive had the chance to drive the 991S on a few occassions and gotten to really put the car through its paces.
Performance, simply put is insane. Will run with most cars with 500 hp. The handling is sublime...crisp and absolutely pin point accurate (think sniper rifle hitting target on a boat going up and down with 8 foot sweels from a mile away accurate).
In terms of steering...I do not agree on this aspect. The 991S even though it has electric steering (which everyone is transitioning to) is still amazing and the e9X M3 still cant match it by any means. The Carrera S was on par with the last 997 Mk2 GT3 I drove...it was that good! Definitely still the standard of standards for best in the industry. And you know it will be even more dialed in with the GTX models.
All in all, its taken performance and handling to a new level. Plus the design is aggessive and flows well and the interior is again a new standard.
I cannot wait to see the turbo and upcoming GTx model.

It's good (the 991) but there is no way in hell I am paying $110K, let alone $130K, for a 911..........unless it is a GT versioned one.

Price point vs price point (M3 vs 991) the 991 is nowhere close to being a $40-60K better car in any way shape or form. No way, no how.

Yes exactly. and dont get me wrong im all for if you make it and have it spend it and enjoy yourself. But I cant see having double the monthly payment of an M for something that isn't rare and amazing. In other words. I would prefer a ferrari, lambo , or audi R8 v10 instead of a 991

I agree with everything you said. And this statement is the reason why I sold my GT3 and bought an M3.
