Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport sets land speed record at 267.81 mph!

As production of the Bugatti Veyron winds toward its eventual conclusion, Bugatti has created what is likely to be the ultimate version of its world-beating hypercar: the Super Sports. Bugatti sent its official test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel out on Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessian high-speed oval with the first Super Sports to see just what it could do. With representatives of the Guinness book of records and German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) on hand, Raphanel made passes around the big oval in both directions.

With output bumped up from 1,001 horsepower to 1,200 horsepower, torque swelling to 1,106 pound-feet and a revised aerodynamic kit, Raphanel managed runs of 265.9 and 269.8 mph for an average terminal velocity of 267.81 mph and a new world record for a production car.

The first five production Super Sports will sport the same black and orange finish as the record car and all production models will be electronically limited to 257.9 mph to protect the tires. The Veyron Super Sports will be publicly shown for the first time at the Pebble Beach in August. Click past the break for the full details.

I did not except Bugatti to do this. Much props to them for setting another record and not lettign up without a fight in this modern era of ever increasing horsepower and top speed.

Lets just wait and see what SSC does now. But it is impressive what Bugatti has done and I would rather have the Veyron super sports over the SSC car. It is better engineered and look better to me.

This will be the swan song for the Veyron, but what a way the go. Interestingly the torque has been limited by the restrictions of the gearbox and the topspeed by the tyres.

Here are two stories of the Veyron Super Sport record top speed run. The car is now officially in the Giuness Book of World Records for fastest production car.

The top speed test (V-max) was conducted on Volkswagen's Erha-Lessien test track. This track has two 10 kilometer long straights! One lap took the car about ten minutes to go around it!

Some stats:

1200 PS (normal road car has 1001 PS!)
1500 Nm

Price: 1.95 mil euros! (standard super sports cost "only" 1.65 mil)

Normal Super Sports have a 420 kph or 415 kph (depending on which mag you believe!) "speed limitor". This particular (orange over blackl)car has no speed limitor!

Test date: June 26th, 2010
Test conditions: 24' C, 38.9% humidity, 1007 mBar air pressure

Final V-Max: 431kph!

PS: Don't forget james May pilot'd a "normal" Veyron to 407.9 kph a few years back! Not bad for a guy with the nickname Caption Slow! :")
