Now streaming music via airplay

I saw this article/DIY on the net and read up on others who have tried it, and decided to give it a go myself. My M3 doesn't have ipod connection and or the usb port in the armrest. I was looking for an easy BT solution to stream music from my phone, but wanted to try this solution as it is supposed to offer higher quality audio.

I used this website below to do it.

http://evolver.fm/2013/06/06/airplay...s-in-your-car/

Some things I did in my install to note:

- Used a dual port 2.1 Amp low profile cigarette lighter/usb adapter to fit in the center console better
- Used a rubber grommet that I had in my tool box that you can get in any auto parts store as "strain relief" where the usb cord goes into the airport express.
- Bought a refurbished airport express from Apple (cheaper)

The solution is more pricey than a similar BT solution, but I like it. I can take it into another car as long as it has an Aux-in port. I can also use it in the house and plug it into my home receiver. Pandora, spotify, and itunes radio all work fine.

Another pleasant suprise is that since my bmw doesn't have iDrive/nav, I tried using google maps as I was streaming music to the airport express and the voice instructions played over the car speakers. The music volume lowered, it said it's instructions, and then the music faded back in. The music overall sounds good, volume can be controlled either via the car's HU or through your iphone. I understand there are apps for airplay capability for those with Android phones as well.

This is the most aggressive workaround I've seen to date.

Well done sir.

Notice any difference in the audio quality between using AirPlay and the aux in from the headphone jack? I've encountered some lag/degradation on my home network a handful of times. I figure it'd be better since it's the only device using the Airport Express.

Easier way

There is a much easier way to do this. They sell a ad2p Bluetooth streaming adapter. Google Viseeo tune2air wma1000

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00B73...=mp_s_a_1_sc_3

I have had it for about 2 months and I love it. It even displays the song title and you can control with your I drive knob.

No difference that I can tell. I've used in my home too but still as my phone is the only device on it's "network".

I've looked at this not sure if it would work in my 320i but sounds like it would. Since my phone is connected to my car via bluetooth for voice will it switch over when i receive a call?

Yes. It recognizes both devices and will switch over. At least it does for my iPhone

I just order a $29
Sabrent Wifi Audio Receiver (Supports DLNA and AirPlay) for Home Stereo, Portable Speakers (WF-RADU)

Seems it will be plug and play and fit in the center console.

Anyone try this?

Sounds promising. I didn't see it immediately, but I'm curious if it has a boot up time.

Reviews say 15-20 secs. Which is ok for me. I'll post a review.

This is a easy plu and play solution. Worked out of the box, much better quality over bluetooth audio. Connection time was 5-10 seconds.

I've jettisoned this option, the sound deteriorated over time. I'm trying out a new option.
