Individual M3 Resale Value
Hey guys,
So I know this is a fairly open ended question, but historically when I would value a car I would depend on kbb or nada to provide the correct value. However over the years it's become apparent that some m3s resale value are higher than those websites. For e46, I'm thinking Alpine White/Cinnamon and Laguna Seca cars seem to fetch more money than Carbon Black, Silver, etc. Does the same hold true for e9x? Say you find a Monte Carlo, Fire Orange, Dakar, or Laguna Seca individual e9x. Would the resale value be better than the kbb or nada due to the rarity? I'm thinking its worth a little extra, may a few thousand, but not a ton more. I'm currently looking at an e92 with an individual interior and exterior and the seller wants about $10k more than what both kbb and nada has as "excellent" condition. Not sure if its worth it, but wanted to gauge opinions. Thanks guys, Mike

10K seems like a lot to me for a paint job.

It really all depends on what the buyer is willing to pay. When I sold my MCB m3 last year it was scooped up pretty fast bc the buyer really wanted a MCB M3. I would think a indiv color car would def hold a little more value then a reg colored car just bc the buyer that is in the market for that is willing to pay a little more to be unique or its a special color they always wanted. Now as far as 10k over the value of the car? Well that all depends on how bad you the buyer wants the car right? To someone who isn't in love with the color or isn't someone that has to have that color its a rip off, but to someone who has to have that color and the seller has the only one around then most likely you will pay the sellers asking price

On the contrary, I believe "Individual" order cars would end up being worth -less- to the vast majority of buyers and perhaps slightly -more- to a few buyers that happen to like that specific combination.

I think an indivudual car in a desirable color would have some additional value. I would not however think that the value would exceed the price new. Individual paint is around $5k and individual interior is around $4k (including extended leather which is $1k stand alone option) IIRC. I would not pay an extra $10k on the used market.

i would depreciate the option on the same rate as the "rest of the car". So a comparable AW car say has a 20% depreciation over first 2 years, I would depreciate your paint color option original pricing at a 20% rate as well, and perhaps add a few hundred or $1000 in for that "rare" factor and see if a buyer values it the same way.

I would say that maybe up to $5k - I would love a rust brown interior and would pay extra for it, say $2500 more over a comparable non-individual M3. Add in a similar amount for paint if you really like it. Don't forget that a lot of buyers won't necessarily think of it this way since so many buyers are focused on monthly payments. From that point of view an extra ~$50/month or similar "small" amount can lead people to overpay.

Thanks for all the comments guys.
I would agree that $10k would be a lot for paint; however, this includes $5k for individual paint and $4.5k for individual interior. So maybe that's where the seller is coming up with the $10k difference. And I also understand a car is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it. So if you have a BMW enthusiast looking for a rare combo, they will fork over the money to do so.

Probably, but paint and leather depreciate the same as everything else, maybe more so if it is unusual/may appeal to fewer buyers (see Phoenix "Unsellable" Yellow.) Hence my ~$5k number.

No chance the seller will recoup the retail value of those options. Yes, to an enthusiast looking for that combo, it's gonna be worth a premium. I would say $3 to $5k additional would be max.

a friend of mine bought a ~4 year old Exclusive RS4 (Audi equivalent of Individual) and did not pay much of a premium vs. "regular" color cars, if at all

ALSO, I've actually already had offers to buy my new E92 M3 in Phoenix Yellow off me. So you way want to rethink "Phoenix Unsellable Yellow"...

I personally like the color, but just like Fire Orange or Java Green its way too loud for most people. Theres obviously a loyal following because they still make it.. but if you brought it to a dealer to just dump as a trade in, I wouldn't be surprised if they offered you less than a monochromatic color just because the target market segment is that much narrower. I'm liking the $5k or so max on top of the kbb. I honestly think this is the most fair option. They still get a little extra due to the rarity and I pay a little more for that. I don't think you should end up paying $10k more than the car's top value in "Excellent" condition from NADA. Just doesn't seem worth it at that price point.
Also, didn't realize they offered the E92 M3 in Phoenix Yellow. I think it looks very man, props to you.

As an owner of an Individual car, I'd certainly hope that the resale is a little higher. I also have no intention of ever selling this thing though.
