M3 revs bounce / stalls after gas fillup

2009 m3, after filling up w gas, at the next traffic light, idle starts bouncing around. Been doing this for awhile, and on Sunday, it stalled in traffic. Embarrassing. Started right back up tho. After a few minutes, this goes away.

Car runs perfectly otherwise.

I've read a few threads here about others having exact same issue - but no indication of a specific fix / solution. It now consistently happens immediately after filling up at the gas station.

Anyone have ideas?

Happened to me twice from same gas station and pump. I noticed it happen when pulling out I had the wheel cut all the way right and road is sloped so my front is higher. It never stalls but it goes up and down for about 10 seconds and then settles. :

Had this on my 2011 car. Car does not throw codes, ultimately with the help of other forum members it was corrected by replacing the fuel tank breather valve...

See post #20 in this thread for video of my symptoms. gpitts, the OP in this thread had a number of things replaced chasing down the issue including the idle control valve. Ultimately it was his dealer who fixed his car by replacing the fuel tank breather valve. Saved me from multiple visits to the dealer!

When do you guys fill up? Try filling up before the low fuel or fuel reserve warning comes on (basically before any fuel warning lights).

I'd throw two tanks of Techron concentrate, back-to-back and see if it goes away. I've had this happen 3 times in 3 M cars, and it was bad gas.

Right, try different gas station/techron but none of this worked for me. It was not bad gas, it was the breather valve... But certainly worth trying!

always happens to me after filling up at Costco. Never happens to me after filling up at Chevron. Not as bad your - but my car bounces and stutters at startup. No biggie.

Then that was clearly the Costco gas. I filled up at various Shell, Chevron and Exxon stations trying to eliminate the gas as the culprit. Even added Techron as well but none of these efforts solved the problem. The video is not the worst of it, my would also stall occasionally or the idle would dip low enough that my DCT transmission would put itself into neutral. The occasional rough idle at start-up I could live with...

Mine sounds similar to a cold start every time I put gas in it. Doesn't seem to matter how much I put in. I assumed this was normal behavior (slightly rough idle after opening the gas cap)?

I forgot to mention this. I tried a few different brands of gas. It does it with every brand (Shell, Chevron, BP, Pilot.. and whatever else was on the way to wherever I was goin...)
