Akrapovic evo vs slip-on

Am a newbie to mods and wondering whether this is a big difference in the exhaust sound between the akrapovic evo sys and the slip-on one for the BMW M3?

Also, is this the same exhaust as the one used by the M3 GTS?

Slip-on is just that, a slip on system/ cat back system.

Evolution is a full system. From the manifolds ( headers ) back with Highflow Cats.

GTS doesnt use it but I think GT4 uses the Akra Race system which last I checked had no cats at all.

Akra. Evo sounds rougher/meaner and more bassy than slip-on. Evo gives 20 hp more than slip-on due to lack of primary cats.

Also with Evo you'll hear intake resonance betweem 3000-4000 rpm.

Evo sounds much better IMO. Better sound and better performance, don't settle for less.

I don't know what state you are in, but I am wondering how you all are passing emissions testing with these catless systems. Even if you can get a flash to bypass the CEL, you will still fail the cat readiness tests.

Also in Massachusetts, it is illegal to put on any modified exhaust that makes the car louder than stock, although that one is harder to prove. People have gotten ticketed for this, however. And in places like CA, they are illegal if not CARB certified.

How are you all getting around these tighter regulations?

You should move to Florida!

I've had my slip-on for a few months now and have been completely happy with the sound and looks. I have the EVO pieces sitting in my office and I'm really excited based on what everyone says. Can't wait to install it after BMW is finished fixing my main bearings.

But my point is, you might be happy enough with the slip-on. The good thing is you can always upgrade to the EVO when you want more.

Most Akrapovic Slip-ons we've installed have returned within the week to add on the X-pipe.

Either way you choose, the parts purchased separately will still come out to the same price as if purchased as a system.

I have a question about Evo - does it cause issues in terms of passing emissions?

Also: how loud is it?

I'm tempted to go with the slip-on as it presents a convenient middle-ground, but if the Evo is street legal, etc. and won't complicate my life significantly come emissions time I might go in that direction.

I have the EVO and love it. Here in Florida, we don't need to go pass emissions every year anymore. I remember those days.

But if you don't want to spend the money on the EVO, get the slip on now and if you want later, get the X-pipe.

Everyone has different opinions. I never saw myself spending so much money on the EVO either but at the end, everything I heard made me decide to go for it.

What happened to the days when we'd

Sorry. I'm on my phone.

What happened to the days we'd buy a Apex muffler or a Greddy muffler and go to Miami Muffler for the piping? Those were great exhausts and soooo much more cost efficient.

This is true. Once u get accustomed to the sound of akra slip, u just want more and end up getting full evo. Pay the labor charge one time and get the evo.

We may have the most extreme laws, but we have the least enforcement too. Especially on new cars, where you don't need to smog check them for the first 5 years (or is it 6 years)? Aside from the smog check, we do not have any other annual state inspection. So if you're exempt from a smog check fort he first 5 or 6 years, you can essentially get away with it, and that's what some people do. And even after that time, it's easy and cheap enough for most folks to take the aftermarket system off, get it checked, and then put it back on.

I'm sitting here cracking up at this comment because I must have done that same thing for at least 5 cars. Everything from an SRT-4 i had , then to an IS350 then to a 06 Evo MR. Man i miss those days ...exhaust for the M3 is insane. But that's moving up in life..the toys get more expensive.

No. I was very diligent in listening for drone. Before I had the Akra installed I listened very carefully to where the stock exhaust droned (it does drone a bit around 2000-2500 rpm) and the Akra was maybe a bit louder at those RPMs. I wouldn't classify it as a drone though, just exhaust noise.

I've made some bad choices in the past with exhaust systems, and no drone was paramount for my selection.

What folks should really do is actually listen to the exhaust systems in person before dropping large sums of cash. Videos don't do ANY exhaust system justice.

+1. A compressed YouTube video does the system no justice.

We have an Akrapovic Evolution system installed on our Supercharged e92 M3 for those local to the Anaheim area who want to take a listen.
