All the opinions make valid points. Everyone has to decide for themselves. Machines need maintenance. BMW makes great machines. To have a car with this capability and not expect to fix it is naive. I'd take my chances with the M3 over many other cars that are typically driven hard.
Stories of 300,000+ miles on other M BMW's, albeit with proper maintenance, are comforting. I would by the M5 from the guy in the video who bought it new for example. But I would not by an M3 with 50k if I found videos of it doing burnouts and drag races, or just too much evidence of previous modification. Also, my 08 M3 get's the "looks brand new" comment all the time. |

I'd pass on a 100K m3 unless it was an e36 or e46.
For an e9x, there are plenty of low mileage examples and that price doesn't really warrant the miles IMO. For another $5K you can seemingly get an 08 with 40K less miles. Oh and for strictly a track car, I'd probably look for a car with a salvage title if I was going to strip and build it anyhow. |

I just dont understand why someone want would a car that has to be used to the point of 100k miles and no warrnety. i get it if you are buying a economy car, and cant afford much.
but a BMW M3..... the car may be 30k, but it uses the same parts as my 2013 75k M3 uses. have fun with the repair bills..... |

In 3 years his $30,000 car will be worth $25,000. In 3 years your $75,000 car will be worth $40,000. In those three years, you will have had similar parts costs and similar driving experiences. You're down $35,000, he's down $5000.

if you buy new and maintain it well and keep it a long time even with the depreciation you are getting the best years of the car and still doing better than buying new every 5 years. I see some ugly jealousy from 08/09 M3 owners toward 12/13 M3 owners in this thread. not so cool. |

hum, cant say i ever thought about resale value or which ones holds value better. always been a new car type of guy.
man it must suck to suck..... I will get off my high horse now. don't ever think buying a highly used car is better or smarter then new. new will last longer with all things equal. bottom line. Last edited by Ezio; 07-04-2013 at 01:37 AM.. |

however Most people, including M3 buyers, buy the car new, and then, 3-5 years later, sell it at a HUGE depreciation loss, and then buy another new car. It's certainly nice to have a new car that often, but undoubtedly it's also far more expensive than buying a 3-4 year old car and driving it for 3-5 year, then selling. You're looking at $35,000 in depreciation vs $5-10,000-- that's enough to cover 2 engine failures. Which isn't to say people shouldn't do it-- if the money is inconsequential to you, owning it new is easier (issue? take it to the dealer, their problem) and free of other people's cooties. I was just explaining why someone might by a higher mileage M3 to this guy. Same driving experience, no $30,000 write off. Quote:

I bought my 2008 e92 in December of 2012 with 96k I now have 107k on it. the car was only maintained by bmw. when I picked up the car I replaced all the "lifetime" fluids when I bought it. I picked up the service records for it. the previous owner only ever had one break down which was a throttle actuator. right now I'm getting a 02 sensor code. two very common things. as for the strength of the motor I average 17 mpg mostly city driving. I have drove a few other e92 m3s and didnt notice them being any faster then my car. these cars are very well built and were made to last. I would buy another high mileage one any day! oh and I only paid 28000 for a own owner no accident loaded minus sunshades and zcp

It's easier to find a M3 in the $40k range, so you can shop around for one that's been taken care of. |

bottom line on these cars is if your willing to turn your own wrenches mileage is not really much of a factor. in 10k miles I have spent about 500 in maintenance and that included spark plugs drivetrain fluids 5k engine oil changes and 2 air filters. that's probably 3k in work at the dealer which is absurd for how easy these cars are to work on
