if you're stock, it'll be a very close race.

I had a stock 99 SS, 320 hp. Quick off the line, about a 5.3 0-60. However, it ran out of steam above 70-80 mph. I would say close from a dig. At higher speeds, I would go with the 335 i.

6 speed LS1 cars can go mid 12's stock with a good driver. From somebody who's last car was a LS1 trans am, I think you'll get rolled.

I agree, I had a 97 SS and it was a beast at the time. It's gonna be close, but I think the SS is going to win, still has more brute force, more of a "drag" type of car than a 335. Now if any turns were involved I'm sure it would be a different story. I have an idea..........just do it and let us know the outcome

+1, stock for stock the 335 won't hang

See sig for reference point. My TA was putting down 320rwhp when it just had an airlid and catback (SS has the same mods from the factory)

My goal is to mod the 335 to get back into my lightly modded LS1 range...but with the style and comfort of a BMW.

Sounds like my SS was under powered. It was an auto. It just wasn't that fast. BTW, I had an 83 Z-28, 91 Z-28 and 94 Z-28 also.

LS1 F bodies don't go mid 12's stock - with a few mods they can, but not stock. I've seen low 13's and high 12's stock. Mostly low 13's though, with quite a few mid 13's. Mone went 13.4 stock before I did anything to it. I have even seen people run low 14's stock depending on conditions. I had a 98 with the short length manifold, exhaust, throtlle body, reflash, 3.73 gears, lots of suspensions mods - all the bolt on stuff. Best run was a 12.90 at 114. Depending on the car and how good the driver is, it could be close. Factory wheel horesepower and stock is actually pretty close between the two, as is weight. If you have a piggyback, you'll likely win though. I disagree with the Fbody dying at 80 though - mine was a beast up to about 130 or so when the GM aerodynamics were flapping, and in my case I was starting to run out of legs. It was actually better from about 30-40 on up, since anything below that you couldn't hook. I even had 315's on mine, and it was a joke trying to hook. If you go from a dig, you have an advantage for sure there, but up high he might pull pretty hard.

SS Camaro's run mid 13's.
I think it will be a drivers race. He might pull on you above 100 mph tough.

should be a close race w/ the SS pulling you slowly until high end when it should start to walk.

Let's not forget to factor in how well it was maintained. I had a friend with an LS1 firebird, that ran a 13.8 due to piss-poor maintenance over the last 8 years

My M6 01 WS6 went 12.7 @108 mph with a 1.82 60' when it was bone stock except for 315 street tires. I've seen them (with my own eyes, not internet racing) go as low as 12.3 with DR's (if the 10 bolt held). Granted this was at a negative DA the night it went 12.7. I never took it back stock since I put longtubes and a 12 bolt with 4.10's the day after.

There's only one way to find out, but my $100 is still on the F-body.

that's the problem. Stock SS's are kinda rare. the least they have a CAI or exhaust, which do make a difference

Some of you guys are crazy.

Any LS1 car is going to put a hurting on a stock 335, assuming the driver isn't a complete idiot. Depending on year range, 01,02s had better intake manifold, and whether the vehicle was an SS/WS6 (catback and airlid stock) they are good for mid 13s down to high 12s. They don't run out of steam until well over 100, they excel in 3rd gear.

Last car was a close to stock '02 LS1 Z28 with SS rims. They are not slow cars even stock and were comparatively faster when they were built and the most bang for your buck ever; it's taken 5 years for BMW to build a $40,000+ 3 series that's as fast. However, doing a little magazine racing, stock vs. stock, the numbers out of the magazines are very close. Looking at the weights of the two cars and the rated power of the engines, it shouldn't be that way, but like the LS1 in the Z28, the N54 is underrated.

Another problem is that very few Z28s are stock, most are at least lightly modded; even I had a different lid and Holley air filter on mine ($250 total mods) and I'm sure that probably gave me in the neighborhood of 10 extra horses or so. I wanted to race the guy I sold the Z28 to when I got my 335i, but he's deployed downrange for a year, so it's going to be awhile before I get to try that out.

As far as how they stack up according to me; the Z28 was fun, loud and rough around the edges. The 335i is so much better than the Z28 handling wise (I'm sure it would devestate the Z28 on a road course) and at high speed (above 100 mph) on the autobahn; with the Z28, I felt like I was holding on for dear life when I went that fast, but with the 335i it's almost a non-event.

But I (and my 7 and 4 year old) do miss the roar of the V8 engine and the way I could drift the car sideways with smoke pouring from the rear wheels and the T-tops on a nice day.

Find out what he's got under the hood, then race him. THEN TELL US WHAT HAPPENED. Why do people ask dumb questions like "should I race him?" Of course you should (though it should be on a track)!
