Can't stop smiling about my M3!!! New owner driving impressions

After an incredible wait and months in the making, my M3 is here!!! I have been lurking on the forums for quite a while now and I can finally join in on the fun!!!

Considering there is almost no performance gain with the coupe, I had to go with the sedan for the basic utility. Plus I think the sedan looks a little more outrageous with the flaired rear fenders and the overall look is still menacing. (The modified sedan picture thread definately helped!!!) Pictures and sound clips really do NO JUSTICE to his car, you definatly have to look at it and feel it in person! The best part is that this car will be tracked, more about that below. Here are the car's details:

Alpine White with black leather and carbon trip
September 2008 build date
18's with stock PS2's 245/265 - I was happy about the full rubber!
EDC, navigation, technology package, cold weather package
I think it has convenience and premium package, but not sure yet
NO MOONROOF - amazing for the track!!
It is totally totally loaded and I believe it has Novio leather, if there is a way to find out what other packages are on the car, please let me know!

I was initially looking between a 335 or an E46 M3 and looking at the E46 subframe, vanos and varous problems and considering it wouldn't be under warranty I had to stay away. Then the 335 posed the problem that it would be untrackable without $2K in oil cooler & other mods so I upsold myself to the E9X M3. Best decision ever!!!! This car has absolutely everything I want and I will used EVERY feature to the max.

My driving impressions so far is that it is an incredible machine!!! The engine is absolutely amazing and there is nothing I want more than to wait for the oil temperature to hit 210. The pull in any gear from 4-6k is great and 6-8.4k is mind blowing. It is almost really hard to drive this car around town because if you redline it in almost any gear, and then shift you are already going more than 70mph. Luckily this car will be tracked so I will have an outlet. The startup and exhaust sound great, I love that beefy large engine sound. I would have only considered an aftermarket exhaust for sound and after hearing it at 8000rpm I don't need a thing, the stock exhaust is LOUD and I am more than happy so far.

Another instant thing I noticed is the tighness on the road. On any EDC setting the car feels incredibly planted. Every movement is just so precise and accurate; I love that! The 6-speed transmission is pretty straight forward, I wish 6th gear was a little wider for highway cruising, but I am sure I will appreciate the tight gear ratios later under heavy acceleration. I still have to get used to 1st gear too. I picked the 6MT because it is that much more fun to drive and the only drawback will be toe-heel downshifting on the track so I have some practice to do.
I have also been incredibly impressed with the gas milage so far. I have been averaging 15 to 17 mpg and hit 17 on a 110 mile drive home, where I was definately redlining and even got stuck in a 30 minute traffic jam. I know that the mileage won't be great with this big engine, but I will love every second and will NEVER complain to fill it up, even if gas is $5.

My major irk so far is the iDrive interface. I have gotten used to it now and see how to navigate through different screens, but it is just too slow!!! Coming from 2 Mercedes which have the most logical and quick to use interface I was really frustrated the first day I had the car and got lost in San Francisco! Even though I know how to use it now, typing in an address into the navi is just painstaking. I have been just pointing to locations on the map to avoid that!!!
Other than that I am so so happy. Every time I show someone the car we can't stop smiling and looking at all the features. And there is so much car for me here, I hope that I can tap most of its usage.

And definately the best part is that I will test this car to some of its limits on the track. I live in Monterey, CA which is 15 minutes from Laguna Seca!!!! I go to alot of races every year (Ferarri Challenge was sick) and I will be doing at least 2 track events there with the M3 this season. I will also be autocrossing about 10 or 15 times a year to tune up my techniques. There is also the possibility to hit Infineon Raceway which is about 3 hours away. But this is where I will really be able to have some fun with this car. (After some track experience I actually drive alot safer around town and reserve myself for events.) I will be autocrossing the car stock and will have to do a few things to get it track ready. For me the bare minimum to safely go to the track would be high temperature race pads and track wheels. I am a wheel and tire guy and absolutley cannot wait to finalize my track setup, it will definately be a nice staggered set!

Other than that my only other mod coming soon is window tint, I know this AW is going to look amazing with dark windows and the gunmetal rims. I hope you enjoyed my first of many posts! I am pretty damn excited to be able to own this car! I am actually just leaving for work 30 minutes early to drive this car around, haha!!!!

My feeble attempt at an artsy shot. A little to sunny/overexposed!!!

One of the few pictures I had to go by for the 3 weeks it was being shipped!!!

What do you mean "no performance gain with the coupe"?? Coupe is 65HP more than sedan with 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. Just kidding
Congrats. One thing I promise you will have the same smile on your face many many months later. I still have one after 13 months and 24K miles

I just got back from doing my ED (will create a thread soon), and I was just blown away with this car. It's much like yours, an AW E90, and let me tell you, after driving it on the autobahn, it's going to stink driving it on our highways. I was able to cruise at 60-80mph where it was limited to 100-130 kph, and when the "end speed limit" sign would pop up, I would just floor it in 6th, not even downshifting, and the damn thing would go from 60 mph to 120 mph in no time, all the while singing just a beautiful note. It was so damn addictive. Congrats on the car, and enjoy it at Laguna Seca. That's a great track. I'll hopefully be there in my car later this year.

Did you recently buy that from Pace? I'm pretty sure I sat in your car while my mother was picking up her X5...

They list their tracks as a little wider than a normal AutoX so I will have a chance to let the V8 do some work!!!

Yeah this is the problem I am finding. Showing a friend what 8000rpms sounds and feels like, is instantly illegal in any gear!!! (xcept 1st)
