This is from full stiff, corner balanced with Dinan Front Sway bar on the lowest setting. I just ordered a new set of TD's and will hopefully give it a try on the same circuit next month. Appreciate your comments on the KW settings.

Cheers!

I'm not a suspension tuner but softer rebound in the rear will give you some more grip. So can either stiffen up the front or just soften up the rear. No homo though.

Went to Buttonwillow and was able to finally set a new personal best. My old personal best stood since November 2015. Took a whole second off. (And there's more to be had.)

2009 E90 M3
Track/course: Buttonwillow 13CW
Best Lap Time: 1:48.07
Brakes: AP Racing - Cobalt Friction XR2 front/XR3 rear
Tires: Yes.

Oh man---there is so much green vegetation there right now! It's so tall, it hides some lines of sight on the track that I'm used to. For instance, going towards Bus Stop as you go around the left rounder, the track disappears into the grass! The greenery is unbelievable....actually it's distracting.

hehe tell me about it. That's why I noted that there's more time to be had. In my AIM Solo DL, I have divided Buttonwillow into 4 sectors/segments. (I like to look at these sector times in addition to analyzing each corner. To me, it gives some indication of your flow throughout several connected features.) Anyway, in looking at the AIM data, NONE of my fastest sectors of the day came from this lap. All the fastest sectors came from other laps done later. (I ran 8 laps in the 1:48's that day.) Anyway, I've driven the pieces for a mid-1:47's. As usual, it's just a matter of seat time and building more consistency to do it in one lap. I'm not in a hurry. As this is my hobby, I am content to take my time. Keeps me interested.

I have some other thoughts and comments that I'll post in my build thread soon.

Thanks Joe!

I've been enjoying our little back-and-forth with lap times at Buttonwillow! We seem to have our own E9x M3 mini time attack battle going on. Good times!

Have fun and good luck!

(I'll discuss my car setup next week on my build thread.)

hehe the beauty of this for me is that it doesn't get sorted in one day. It's on-going. I prefer that kind of challenge. You guys make changes, I make changes and we keep going back and forth. Sometimes we end up at the same events; other times we're off at different tracks. (I can't go this weekend---family stuff.)

Your lap times have been dropping consistently over the last few months with this superlight E92 build. My previous personal best of 1:49.0 has been around since November 2015 and not much has changed in the vehicle since then. It will be interesting to see where your times start to plateau.

Anyway, I'll be curious to see how your weekend goes.

Oh yeah, one other thing-----you mentioned you have several cameras on the car. Let's see some video with data overlay from these fancy laps you're putting down! If I'm doing videos with data, I know you guys can too!

No worries...I'm sure we'll see each other soon!

Thanks! I was at Chuckwalla trying to hit 53's, but my throttle actuator went out so came back and did a refresh on the car (radiator, oil cooler, both actuators, starter, and alternator).

I'll post up once I get back.

I've been having a SH*T ton of camera issues. It would work then not work and record only 1 second bits. So I moved the power to a toggle switch instead of running it through my Traqmate. Hopefully this will fix it. I have data but no video's Hoping to get some this weekend.

Portland International Raceway wasn't on the list yet, so I added my scrubby and newbish 1:35.

Sadly the E92 is relegated to street use now as I've built an E46 M3 track car.

Thats awesome, not sure if its been discussed before but what program/camera did you use for the telemetry to show up on the video? I will be visiting buttonwillow in April and would love to setup a camera like this.

Thanks! The camera is a GoPro suction-cupped to my bumper. You can see it in this photo. I like having it under the left headlight because it shows the video from the driver perspective. The audio sounds crisp because there's a microphone inside the rear bumper and it's wired up to the camera in the front. If you zoom on in the picture, you can see a wire plugged into the camera. That wire is running the length of the car.

The finished video with data overlay as you see in my videos is a fair amount of setup effort. However, once you have a template in place, you can generate a video fairly quickly. (I'll start by saying you don't need to go crazy like I have. You could simply get the Harry's Lap Timer phone app and a suction cup holder for your phone and stick your phone on the inside of your windshield. The Harry's app would be able to capture some basic gps data, record video, and with a single button press, it could automatically marry the basic data onto the video and you'd be done. It takes virtually no effort at all. But the results are just....ok.)

Here's my going-off-the-deep-end way:

-AIM Solo DL - is a gps-based lap timer that I have tied into the CAN bus of the M3. The AIM tied into the CAN bus can capture all kinds of data including oil temps, water temps, ambient air temps, gas and brake pedal presses, gear selection, rpms, etc. Using the pc-based AIM software, you export the data as an Excel file.
-GoPro video of the desired lap.
-RaceRender - this is the app that turns the Excel data into gauges, charts, graphs, etc., and then overlays the data onto the video. RaceRender has a lot of great features if you dig in. The initial setup of a template can be fairly time consuming, but once it's done, it streamlines the video-making process. Let's say the template process is already done. In RaceRender, you import the Excel data and the video, and then you have to hand-synchronize them. There's just no automatic way to do that. Since the AIM collects RPM data, and you can hear the revs on the microphone, it takes a bit of massaging to get the synchronization right---you want that rpm needle matching the sound of the revs. Once that's done, you can just export the video. (The time difference window in the top left requires another set of steps that I won't get into now.)

Wow, that is complicated, but it looks great! I will definitely check out Harry's lap timer application. Thank you!
