After installing new exhausts, my m3 eats gas like cookiemonster eating his cookies
A few days ago I installed my aftermarket exhausts (Encore Innovation Titanium exhausts) after getting them from my buddy. The tone of the exhaust note was thrilling and mind blowing. The first 15 minutes of the ride after installing the exhausts was unbelievable. Everything went really well until I noticed that the fuel gauge was going down noticeably more. When I had my stock exhausts, I can cruise in 7th gear for a day and my fuel gauge wouldn't go down much but after installing my new exhausts my car is eating gas like a Bi***!!
I'm just wondering if this is normal. Many thanks!! ***Please read my updated post on the next page!!** Last edited by Seven7; 06-21-2012 at 11:58 AM.. |

should have little little impact, absolutely not that much if just the muffler. I had straight pipe, stock cats and resonator on before, no change in the total miles i can go on each tank of gas

No I havent went over 4k rpm, i shift gear around 1.5k. I did this to see how much gas this car is eating on my way to school and my school is only 4kms away from my place. There is no way my fuel is downing so fast. I checked what the fuel consumption on my car was and it was averaging 17.8 litre/km when Im in 7th gear. I dont think this is normal to be honest.

You shift gears at 1.5K? That poor engine...

Is it possible that the fuel line was damaged by the install? Any smell? Is that even possible with exhaust install?

Something is wrong. With the degree of computer control in modern motors, it’s hard to guess. I would take it to the dealer and let them do some exhaust emission testing. This is just a guess, but if there is a leak somewhere that would cause a sensor to pick up an overly-lean reading, the ECM might adjust the fuel mixture richer, resulting in worse mpg. But for whatever reason, it seems the engine is running a richer mixture. If that is allowed to become extreme, it is potentially damaging to the motor, so you definitely need to get it diagnosed. Absent any other changes, a less restrictive exhaust system should deliver better efficiency. These motors are gas hogs at best, so I feel your pain.

I had the same issues with all my previous set ups and it was def due to me revving the car a lot more then usual to hear the note If anything I noticed my average gas mpg go up on cruising with full exhaust.

hmmmm changing exhaust wont see much of a change... you must be revving the sucker a lot... hey cant blame you specially on that exhaust...
i got better results when i went full exhaust.... no primary cats.... and i got a better MPG... so its your driving habits must be the new exhaust made you press that gas more often... LOL

Yeah as everyone said, you might be shifting to low? At minimum shift at 2500. If you're cruising you should not let the revs go below 2k IMO
