I'm in the market for a 997.1 turbo (have my e92 m3 for sale) and yes they are stupid fast. I had a 996 turbo a few years ago and know it to be faster than my current M. Having said that, there is always something faster out there and don't sell the M3 short. It is a brilliant car and the best combo of performance and dd ability on the road today. I would keep mine without hesitation if I didn't have the overwhelming urge to get back in a Mezger engined turbo now that the 997s are in my price range.

Turbos are so nice. If they didn't cost so damn much I would be driving one(997 that is).

The roar of the turbos is also impressive, drove a 997 the other day. Definitely sounds monstrous.

Would buy a 997turbo in a heart beat, just not a big fan of the 996.

I'm not a Porsche fan but love the 997TT, that's the only P car I would love have in my garage. I drove my buddies 997TT and it was beyond brutal!!
Loved the car ever since.

Anyone have any insight into the maintenance/upkeep costs for a 997TT (or their suitability for a DD)?

There are several 2008 CPOs with under 20K or so miles in the $80K range...

I have researched this...it seems really good actually. Like BMW level apparently.

I am also curious as to people's experiences with this car.

The blue 997TT in the pick is my friends DD.
Maintenance isn't too crazy, just regular oil changes, tires, minor things like that.

I had a 2007 997 turbo. Great dd and reasonable maintenance costs. I sold it to get my current .2 GT3, which I prefer.

I will say that the turbo's power is so addicting. Every drive feels like warp 8. I just felt the suspension was too soft, the car sat too high and the engine/exhaust noise was rather muted. However, as a civil/classy sports car dd which can bully most anything on the straights and in the corners, there are not many choices.

Be sure to have the DME scanned for any over revs with any pre-purchase inspection.

2009 was the last of the wonderful Mezger engine.

interesting. did you have any mods done to your 997tt?

ive only driven a stock one (a good bit though) and man that thing is a monster. it just demolishes my m3. the torque is so addicting on that car, and the steering is awesome.

i want one

only bad thing is that it is pretty cramped, even for me at 5' 10

No mods. Yes the torque is quite addicting. As much as I sometimes miss the torque, I still prefer the sound, feel and top end rush of the GT3 @ 8500; give or take.

Perfect combo for me would be a used 07-09 turbo and my present gt3.

Don't get me wrong, although the ride height may be more than I like, the handling prowess is ever present on the turbo. I just like my sports cars hardcore like my women...

i have a feeling if you are in a turbo or GTR, rarely would anyone want to pull up beside you and want to race. cause they know they gonna get dust.

Most GTR, atleast modded to 600+hp. just a mid pipe and a tune will net you 600+HP.

I guess I'll start off with an introduction. I've had a 996 Turbo for almost 6 years until I sold it a few months ago. Since then I've been driving my Volvo to and from work until my girl decided to move down to live with me. Thought it was a great excuse to pick up a M3 and give her the Volvo. Makes sense to me.

With that said, the Turbo will pretty much walk the M3 any day of the week. Even more so on weekends. 996/997 Turbos shouldn't have much of an issue on a stock M3. I wouldn't have worried much until I saw some force induction on the M3. As someone stated the Turbo is decently mod friendly. I don't know about $3000 for a good tune and such but I can reasonably say with about $7000-$8000 you'd go from a 420bhp to about 700bhp. 997 Turbos are generally about the same price figure but will probably bump you closer to 750-800bhp. This is including exhaust, injectors, clutch, K24/18G hybrid turbo, tune. If you wanted you can get bigger IC's.

Someone mentioned it riding too high. I think it was the perfect height for what it was made to do. I never really thought the ride was really that soft. There was a very slight bit of roll on hard cornering but I didn't think much of it. Even during PCA track events. :P A lot of people lowered it, I couldn't due to location and pot holes.

I also DDed mine for about 5 of those 6 years. The gas mileage for highway was just absolutely amazing. Even putting down 580awhp, I managed to get about 28mpg highway as long as I didn't get on the gas. WOT... I'd lose a quarter tank after a few spirited runs. :P

I would take a 997.1 TT over an M3 any day of the week. I hope I can at least test drive one before buying an E90 M3. I saw a red turbo cabriolet the other day but quickly lost my attention to it after a brand new Mercedes SLS AMG roadster drove across me.

i am fortunate because...

i own both.

both get thumbs up when they are out and about.
more performance and better gas mileage on the p car.
but the m3 can carry people and things.

apologies for the bad pics.
