Buying Porsche 997....maybe.

Been wanting one for awhile and went and looked at 996 4s but was in rough shape(for a 80k plus car). Stopped at Porsche of orlando and they just took in, still in detail, an 06 grey on grey 911 with 19s Bose and xeonons CPO for 46k. Its a bit more than what I was wanting to spend but lo miles and CPO. What does ot think? Any p car advise. I haven't found any great forums like this. Just 6speed online and it's just ok.

Your car is 6 years old, what will they give you for it? If I was you I would get something newer why not check this link out?

understood...but i am poor so no new Porsche for me. I can't get excited about a new(er) 335i or 335is. i have thought about it but do not want a third 3 series. nothing newer in that price range excites me.

edit. cant really get excited about a Cayman either.

the lotus evoras seem to be coming down in price. I like them but have never driven one. might be an option. I am seeing 2010s in the low 50s. I know very little about those cars.

46k could be a good deal depends on what you mean by low miles. How low is low?

I personally wouldn't go for a 997.1
09+ only

the .1s are missing a lot, they have some known engine issues.. the auto is crap (if you are leaning that way), no iPod connector, shitty PCM, and everytime you see a .2, you'll wish you had one.

a Cayman S is a great drive. I suggest you test drive it before you stick up your nose to it.. it is easily a better car (in all aspects) than your 330...

otherwise, they are very reliable cars, although parts are ridiculously expensive..
example: a Porsche shift knob starts at like 600$
if you can barely afford to buy it, you won't be able to maintain it..

what trim does it have?

Don't knock the Cayman so quickly.

My brother has a 997.1 C4S with the auto gearbox and my mom has a Cayman S with PDK. I took her car and my brother and I did a few runs.

The Cayman S won every time. I actually gave him a head start on one of the runs and the Cayman S actually caught up and over took.

Go test drive a Cayman S and you will definitely change your mind.

Love that set up so much im trading in my 335 for the a new 981 6 speed boxster S.

Here's my review of my 330is, 335i and 997 turbo.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=694095

In connection to some of the comments above.

The 07-09 turbo’s (997.1, they become 997.2 in 2010 with new engines) have the last of the Metzger engines, which are considered to be near bullet proof from all my research before buying. I would be interested in what “issues” that folks are referring too. These engines have been proven north of 750hp on stock internals. The 997.2 have the larger 3.8 liter engines, but they have weaker internals and can’t touch the Metzger engine for modified power. That being said, the pdk dual clutch (see below), makes up for the engine’s power limits by being disgustingly fast (2.6s to 60), something an highly modded 997.1 would struggle to touch. However, I am a manual guy, and this was a non-factor for me.

The 997.1s for 07 and 08 are identical with the 09s simply getting an updated nav/sterior unit. The 997.1s have the Tiptronic, which yes, is slower than the pdk on the 997.2. However, the tips are a lot stronger and are good for north of 750hp where the pdks struggle to deal with 600hp.

I park next to a pdk turbo s every day, and have zero regrets compared to it or an 09 997.1. There was $10-15k price difference between the 09’s compared to the 08 and 07s, not even close to worth the price of an upgraded stereo and a $35-50k price difference between the 997.2 and the 08’s and 07s. I plan on using that price difference to make my car faster and more mine.

They are amazing cars, you have to drive one to understand.

Yea, i was thinking turbos, you're discussing the carrreras. You are completely correct. The IMS is an issue with the 08s and earlier on the 997.1 and the 997.2 that started in 09 corrected this.

The 09 997.2's recieved a ton more changes than the turbos including new engines, brakes, headlights, tail lights, LEDs, stereo, susp settings, and transmission. If you want a carrera, I would suggest going 09+ as well.

Or, go 07-08 turbo for a little more

^1 glad you clarified the turbo vs 997.1 because until the 3.8's came out there is still the loaming IMS and Rear seal issues, not at the 996 level but they do happen. No turbos had IMS issues as that motor's case is unique unto itself. If the OP has a CPO one and it fails under warranty he's golden, if not that is a very expensive fix. Could get the IMS guardian to notify him and I would do that even if it were a CPO car, not sure how Porsche would react to that installed and telling him there's metal in the oil.

As far as the Cayman S goes, drive one. I was thouroughly amazed at how well balanced and smooth that car is. Once you get past the mental block of it not being a 911 variant and if you don't really care what the casual Porsche enthusiast thinks it's a really solid car but expensive to maintain as nothing and I mean nothing can be done without putting it on a lift.

Be prepared for expensive maintenance either way.

Id consider a newer Cayman S witj decent options like PDK.

Be prepared for expensive maintenance either way.
well said to both
the thing is, most casual Porsche enthusiasts don't actually own Porsches and have the gull to look down on Cayman drivers... :/
I own 2 911s and I'm greatly considering getting the next Cayman S (I really didn't like the 991 from the one I tested). Forget about it not being a 911, it is a great car and a Cayman S IMO is better than owning a base Carrera with no options just to say you drive a 911 (something I've seen A LOT).

I went over to Porsche Orlando yesterday...was the car a 6speed, Slate Grey/Grey Interior Carrera? 29k miles? $46k?

If so...I was looking at the car yesterday. The one I saw wasn't CPO though...

Depending on your budget...which I'm assuming is lower than $46k...you're NOT going to get a 997.2. Plan and simple...it's too much coin for the .2 models.

I would stick to a regular 997.1 and call it a day. Throw on some LED taillights and you'll be fine. You won't even be able to tell the difference...LOL

If your looking at the same model I'm thinking...get it. Don't worry about me going in there and picking up the car before you...but I do know for a fact these pre-owned models sell within a week. So you have very little time to snatch it up.

I spoke with the sales guy about CPO'ing it and he said it's do-able for $2,400+/-. See if you can wiggle that in for free and pay the sticker...basically a few CPO warranty.

GL with everything.

BTW: Slate Grey is an extra option. Special color. The car is priced well below market... it's a great buy.

Also the knobs on the radio were really worn down...so make sure they replace all that shit for you before you buy it!

that's the one. He said it was CPO but it wasnt priced or on the lot yet so maybe they changed their mind. Either was I am going to have to pass on this one because the valued my trade pretty low and I am buying a rental property and don't want to over extend my bank account. But come spring I will private party sell my car and get my wife something with more than two seats so I can get a Porsche.

Damn sexy car though.
