Again all these threads do is bring out anger and jelousy in people. It is taking all the young teenage m3 owners and concentrating them in one thread and TOTALLY mis-representing the true age of ownership as the over 30 or 40 crowd laregely is not on the internet boards as they actually have lives. Only a true enthusiast will spend time on the boards or the teenagers.

So again this thread really is pointless to me for gathering any decent data.

What is surprising-a bunch of rich teenagers, especially in cali with parents buying them m3's-no shocker. And I do not believe any 19 year old that has bought an m3 for himself-just doesnt happen unless your parents are paying all your other bills or you live at home.

i'm going to have to call you out on this... /flameon

just because when you were 19, or as you said in your 30's, you couldn't afford an m3 doesn't mean other people cant. where does the cutoff being where they 'can afford' an m3? 20? 25? 30?

When I was 20 i was pulling 70k working part time. Sure my parents co-signed my first loan but no 20 year old has any credit. Fast forward 3 years and I make more than both my parents combined in the low 6 figures, and bought my 2011 e92 on my own. Am i allowed to own an m3?

I'll go back to what you said - people are just jealous.... at 'teenagers' making more money than they did - they just cant justify it. Unfortunately for your ego there are business savy people under the age of 30... /flamoff

The cutoff is 19 because what part time job that is legal can you make m3 money without a college education-not very common. So genius that is why a cutoff is around 20. 25 you could have been to grad school/law school or atleast school-so of course its possible.

I just turned 35 in November. I work in IT. I bought my first M3, an E46, in early 2006. I traded it in after only a few months on an Evo IX. No, I have no idea WTF I was thinking, either. I traded the Evo in on another E46 M3 in 2007. I upgraded to an E90 M3 in late 2008 and then traded it on one of the last new M6s in August of 2010. I would like to own another E9x M3 someday, I think it's a future classic.

I had a part-time sales job when I was 20 and I was making around $90K / year. I could easily buy a M3 if I did not have to pay for my engineering school (decided not to get loan) and didn't have to pay for rent!

I would enjoy their money if they had it to give out. you'll find that the people on this forum that are young and pay for a 70k car themselves don't look for handouts from mommy and daddy and are significantly smarter than others their age (and those that are older). did they catch a good deal? certainly but that's no reason to come into a thread trolling trying to act like there is nothing but rich kids driving m3's on this forum. Yes they are rich kids....but they made their money the old fashioned way. why is it suddenly your business to try and call them out on it - because you drive a 5 series and they are in an m3?

So why in your world is 20 is a cutoff? using your logic what person with a associates degree makes more than 50k? I'll let you in a little secret - you don't need a degree to make money in IT (there is a trend here if you didn't read the rest of the thread). Someone else in this thread put it perfectly: "not having a life contract" is where the money is at. If you're good at something, there are people that will pay you for it, especially in IT where $100 an hour contracting jobs are normal and age is irrelevant if you can accomplish the job.

Not to further dissect your comment - law students are broke until their late 20's (have to pay for law school unless they get in a good firm), MD's same story, grad students even more broke. Education doesn't pay in the near term so using that as a basis for your so-called platform of why a 19 year old can't afford an m3 without mommy and daddy is well beyond anything i can comprehend - must take a midlife crisis to understand fully.

In all honesty, anyone that can afford an M is accomplished - not everyone has the disposable income to blow that kind of money on something they love. I will agree with you on this forum not being representative of the true m3 demographic - but that's inherit to any web forum.

i won't enjoy my parents dough, but i will enjoy my m3...oh don't forget to enjoy that 5 series that you have there...
/flameoff

to everyone else...my appologies - i can't stand people like that on forums!!!

to everyone that drives an M....rock on

Congratulation to every young kid who can afford an M3 with money they made. There is nothing wrong with that. I'd be more resentful with credit default swap traders and investment bankers who are STILL getting crazy bonuses but, sadly, I'm pretty sure that an M3 would be a real step down for them . I'm 33, just placed an order for an M3 vert, I'm a software engineer.

Let me guess: the other 70% want a 911. Right?

Cheers.

I just wanted to quickly comment on this because I've been on both sides of the age discussion with regards to owning an M3...

When I turned 18 I bought myself a one year old, mint 2001 M3. By bought I mean that I used about 20k that I'd saved over the years, 10k that was a high school grad present, 10k that I begged to "borrow" from my parents, and about 10k that I financed after my parents co-signed because obviously I didn't have credit of my own. Now sure I didn't really pay for the entire car, and having my living expenses paid for in college didn't hurt my financial situation, but at that time, whenever someone asked, of course I would tell them I bought and paid for it.

Fast forward to now. I'm 27 and in engineering management. I purchased a one year old mint 2008 M3 in late '09. By purchased I mean I put half down in cash and financed the other half because the interest rate was far lower than what I could return on investments with that cash. I have a mortgage, bills, etc, etc. And when someone asks, of course I tell them I bought and paid for it.

My point is that just because a 19 year old "owns" an M3, don't hate. While some people may appear to be more fortunate than they deserve, the truth is that people usually make their own luck. How frequently do you think a 19 year old that doesn't go to school and is in and out of jail gets financial assistance from his parents for an M3??

Does it feel great knowing that I really, actually, bought this M3? Of course. But did it feel great driving that 2001, knowing that I put every penny I had at that time into it, that my grades were making my parents proud, and that this was only a taste of what was to come if I worked hard - you betcha!

We all feel something special about the letter M. I think that proves plenty.

well said. I am 22. I have jobs and still go to college. I paid for my own car .I drive my own hard work. For people who can afford the m3 when they are 19 : please enjoy your cars. And ignore all these hates and stupid comments.
