First C63 Track Day (former M3 owner)

So I ran my first track day in the C63 today. Previously, I've tracked my two M's in my sig. I ran Mosport, which is a very fast and scary track, for those that know it.

Overall impression of the car was favourable once I managed to get settled in it. I did not run my M3 at Mosport, but instead at other shorter and more technical tracks - Mosport is a HP track. Have driven Mosport a few times in my Z4MC.

Car is a 2012 coupe with AMG performance package (which in Canada is P31 + LSD). I have the stock Yoyos. Tires held up well, brakes performed without much fade (better than M3 brakes, IMO), car did not feel as "crisp" as the M3, however it got the job done and was a lot of fun on the sweepers and fast corners. The stock suspension felt a bit "jumpy" to me, could be my tire pressures as I screwed around a lot. It compresses very well, but rebounds too quickly. Perhaps just not used to it.

I did not have confidence in the stock tires initially so drove 6/10s all the way, although on Mosport in my Z4M (very confidence inspiring car) I probably never passed 8/10's and usually 7-7.5/10 max. To be honest, these tires worked as well (given they worked harder given weight to width) as the PS2's in my M3, if not better as they were perhaps less "greasy" after 5 -10 hot laps.

Temps ran up to 135 celsius hot and the car went into S+ once, otherwise it was OK, no limp mode. I am however planning on a vented hood and /or larger oil cooler. The car did feel heavy to me initially, however once I got used to it, it was OK (the M3 felt much heavier to me first track day after the Z4MC was gone). The car turns in very well and goes where you point it, I did well and was happy with the way I drove. It's almost as though the insane torque the car has made me better at modulating the throttle as I was very afraid of spinning out (almost happenned).

All in all, the car did well. I want to get some R-Comps that are wider now and want to install some form of cooling solution, even though I did not hit limp. I think the M3 felt more "alive" initially, however once I got the feel of the C63, it ran well. I do think the suspension has more bounce, it could be my tire pressure partly as I did muck around with it a lot.

A competant, but different sucessor to the M3.

Thanks for the review...good read.

So overall is the C63 with P31 and LSD more controllable than an M3 or harder to control?

Not to answer for the OP but in my experience, it is a little more difficult in the C63. Not a lot more but some. There is just so much power that you need to be gentle with throttle and be a little smoother with input. Braking and steering control, however, is very similar.

The M3 kills the C63 at the track

Thanks for sharing, I'm looking into a c63, z06, or m3 as my next car... It's a tough choice for me since there aren't many good MB shops around here, but I have 2 amazing BMW shops... I've also had valvetrain issues with my M156 covered under warranty, but the C would not be under warranty since I plan on modifying it...

The AMG brakes are Brembos, so they should definitely be better than the Ms. I'm not sure if dad's c63 carbon fiber hood fits the coupe, but that may be an option. I bet the sound of the exhaust was intoxicating.

Agree.

I was careful on throttle inputs as the C63 PP has a lot of torque and the rears are "skinner" than I would prefer for a car with 443 ft-lbs of torque. However, I think it turned in as well if not better than the M3 and I prefer the steering feel to the M3's over-boosted (IMO) steering. I would really like to run it again with 245 / 275s on it - which will happen soon. Brakes, I think, are better on the C63 PP, despite the weight. Stopped just as well and no fade after 20 minutes of hard lapping each time. Of course, I will still add SS lines and probably change pads for the track next time.

C63's biggest issues are heat from tranny and the rear tires. Rest is all manageable. I think on a fast track I am just as quick if not quicker in the C63; on a tight track, the M3 will likely have it as it is a bit more nimble on the edge IMO, mostly due to weight and ability to modulate throttle with wider inputs.

I will run Cayuga soon (tighter more technical track) and will report on how the C63 runs.

Yes, the brakes are Brembos, 6 pot front, 4 pot back IIRC (gthal?). I asked Dads for a CF hood for the facelift, he is working on it but doesn't have one yet. I think it would help and I've heard in the MB forums that an individual had AMG replace his tranny and engine (or just the latter) oil coolers with larger units. The Black Series has no issues with heat and the other option is to retrofit the BS oil coolers.
