Avoid BMW of Fremont -- Joyride 22(!) miles
Hi all,
So this morning I brought my '11 M3 to BMW of Fremont for 16k miles service. As suggested, I made an appointment with Nick Lal, however upon my arrival I was told that my SA is Aaron Ginn but if I want he can put me to Nick to which I answered it's alright. When Aaron and I were reviewing the items to be completed he estimated 2 hours of waiting, I also pointed that driver side window has a slight rattle when rolling down. Then I asked if I can get a loaner (which I was told on phone that I can't cuz typically oil change only takes an hour) and luckily they had 2 extra cars today hence I could take it (a 2012 328i cp with only 150mi on it btw). The policy is I have to return the car today by 6pm when they close. So I rushed back to Palo Alto... At 4:40pm, got a call from Aaron saying my car is ready. Then I left my office thinking there would be plenty of time to get to there...It wasn't! That was my first time to take 237 to 880 N. I ended up arriving BMW of Fremont 5 minutes before they close. (25miles for 70 minutes). I went to the cashier, signed invoice, took my key and left in a hurry cuz I had another appointment in Sunnyvale which I had to be there by 6:30pm. I got on my car and started it noticing the ODO: 16169, which reminds me to check the invoice...16147/16147. 22miles? Really? Wasn't really mad and didn't want to argue as I had to rush to my appointment. Felt upset because all the "research" and all the efforts (Fremont is totally opposite side of my commuting) were to prevent this kind of stuff happen. But it still happened to me. Hence I would suggest to avoid bringing your cars here. I will definitely not shop from them. Thanks, Jared |

WOAH, thats ****** bullshit.
A testdrive to make sure everything is OK, might take 2 - 3 miles TOPS. I doubt you even need to do a testdrive for a 16k mile svc. Just oil svc right and filter? wow!!!!

I will, but I don't think they will tell me the truth though, maybe even SA wasn't aware of this, who knows. I don't want to make it big deal, I have enough to deal with during the day so I don't really want to be bothered with this. That's why you could see I didn't use emotional words in my article (ite, maybe the last sentence), I just wanted to share what had happened to me. Thanks, Jared |

Actually 22 miles isn't that much...
For an oil change, since we don't have a dipstick. they can't just let the car sit. They drive around so the oil warms up then measure it while it's at operating temp, then drive back. You cannot measure it when it's cold, and you shouldn't let it sit (As the manual states, you should warm the car up while driving). As we all know, it goes take a good 8-12 miles to get the oil up to operating temp, and they would need to drive those same miles back. So 22 miles seems fine IMO But the fact that the invoice doesn't show the extra miles... now THAT is weird.

that's pretty shady that they pencil whipped the "out" mileage. I live in Fremont but always take it to Gary Wilson in Mountain View. That guy takes care of you.

That's why I state prior to the work that NO TEST DRIVES are to be performed which the SA then writes on the estimate that I sign before they work on the car.

I had a similar thing just two weeks ago. Car came in for some warranty work which did not require them to drive the car and when I got it back it had 6 miles on it. My invoice looked like yours where in and out miles were the same.

It has happened to the best of us. I picked up my car once after a few days with 30+ miles on it. I complained and they told me it was standard procedure to drive the car to see if the fault returns
By that same token though, my car was at the dealer for 2 months at one time and it only came back with a few more miles on it. It all depends on who you get

The best response I've ever gotten from BMW NA is a letter for apologies, saying that this doesn't represent BMW NA as a whole and that'll take "special interest in investigating the matter personally" /yawn. Don't BS a BS'er. And they mailed me a coupon for service and a t shirt.

Well, I had a bad experience at Fremont BMW too.
They drove my car into a curb and scratched up the front bumper. Someone tried to clean it to try to hide the damage... Of course no one even mentioned it to me until I pointed it out. If I hadn't noticed, they wouldn't have done anything! This is no way to run a dealership service center. I complained about it on Yelp and the dealership contacted me to ask me to write a follow up saying they did eventually fix the car... well damn I better hope they would! Here was my earlier thread about Fremont BMW: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=566217 After this episode, I didn't go back to them again. I've had a better experience at Peter Pan BMW. Hi gang,
Yes I believe this happens all the time and that is why we do our homework asking which dealer/SA to go to. But it is really hard to really prevent this from happening. I believe there are also cool guys out there in BMW of Fremont, but now I know I would have better luck if I brought it to Peter Pan (shoulda listened to my friend). Thanks, Jared |

22 is excessive! When I brought my car in for 1200 service, my car was only driven for 7 miles. I can get oil measurement info by letting my car idle for 5 min then driving it short distance (5 miles tops)
Your car was definitely taken for a joy ride. |

Sorta. No driving whatsoever is needed to get an oil measurement.

Whenever i want to measure my oil, letting is sit takes forever... to a point where I get impatient. Doesn't the manual state to let the car warm up by driving? and not letting it sit? Did I misread the manual? It has been quite some time since I last looked at it..
