I am a bit confused here. My car came with this shift knob. Why is this a mod?

Your car did NOT come with that knob from the factory. This is the ZHP knob modified to light up like the OEM knob. If your did come with it it is because your bought the car used and the previous owner did it.

I put the German modified ZHP knob on about 3 months ago.... best $100 mod to date. I had already purchased a new unlit ZHP and was going do the led board swap from the stock knob until I saw this one on ebay. One simple cut under the existing hollow shift knob, and then remove and install the new one. It couldn't be easier, looks stock as well. Love it.

Its a great mod. I had the German seller modify it some more so that the "M" would light up for no additional cost. It's perfect!

Replacing oem knob is pretty easy.
Just take the boot clips off then pull oem knob really really hard.
If it doesn't come off, start think about your ex girlfriend/wife or boss you hate. Then try again. Your anger will give you enough power to pull harder.

Just be careful not too hit your face with knob.

Nice! Where did you get the "M Power" e brake handle? It looks cool and would compliment the colors of the stitching nicely.

Redline goods FTW.

Sorry for the worlds largest photo... You can order it from BMW or get it through IND.

Took me 10 minutes to cut the OEM tractor shiftknob out of the car and install the performance one.

This is too 1990 Honda CRX for me.
1) ZHP knob Black leather does not get warm in sun like some chrome aftermarket (e.g. Momo) knobs
2) OEM look of ZHP w 6 speed insert looks perfect
3) Additional 5.4 oz "heft" of ZHP knob over hollow stock plastic knob smoothes out shifts
4) Reduced height of ZHP knob over stock reduces shift throw leading to shorter shifts measured tip to tip
5) Knob shape of ZHP knob fits many/most anthropometric populations, certainly North American male 5% to 95% tile.
6) Economical price point at under $100 unilluminated

I think that about covers it. YMMV.

I opted for the non illuminated ZHP knob for $71.95 from bimmer zone.com as I just didn't perceive a benefit of illumination.

I find the new shift experience with the ZHP knob extremely improved over stock.

Thread revival. What is the process of actually wiring this ebay ZHP knob?

Can't find it anywhere, all I can find is leatherz 2001+ connector install, but this unit looks like it doesn't come with any connectors?
