Technocraft Envy Charge Pipe....Installed
So I installed the charge pipe last night and it definitely wasn't as easy as I thought it was. I mean it wasn't hard, just tedious. The charge pipe is a beautiful piece but has some fitment issues. Maybe it was just mine but I would love for others who have this piece to chime in. So the tedious part to this particular install was using the electrical tape to create a nice seal between charge pipe to manifold. I had to wrap the manifold about 5-6 revolutions. Wrapping the manifold was a bitch!!
Here's the part I'm unsure about. Does the charge pipe need to have an airtight seal? Because initially I only used about 2 layers on each end and that definitely was not sufficient in creating a nice, tight seal. I thought fitment was actually pretty wack for a piece that cost 650. Of course, I proceeded to use more electrical tape to create a more proper seal. The stock charge pipe pretty much has an airtight seal. So again, how important is it to create that same seal with the Envy Charge Pipe? Any input from you guys would be much appreciated. Overall Impression: Thus far, my impression is....NICE!!! Butt Dyno tells me that there's a lot more pull in the low RPM range and it seems to scream harder in the high RPM range. I just feel insecure about the fitment of the piece. Might re-install. Not sure yet tho. Looks-wise, it's the 'ISH. The piece looks really nice in the car. Probably looks even better with the entire system. Wish Technocraft would have made their charge pipe more similar to Agency's with the rubber or silicon hose on each end of the charge pipe for better fitment. |

see the product first if you can. then make your choice cause think the Agency one has a cheap finish.. at least I know have read it somewhere on the forum.

Yea I remember reading that as well actually. I'm hesitant because $625 for an intake charge pipe is pretty expensive and there haven't been REAL dyno numbers yet. Perhaps, Pumper will post his dyno numbers for before and after?

I think Pyspeed has some dynos do some searching I think you will find it. but if think about it again 600 for a charger pipe is actually mid prices compared to dianan or even a AFE design which is made out of steel

Correct me if im wrong but you guys are saying that the agency is the more expensive one i thought it was $300 something and technocraft was the $600 something one with the fitment issues.
Agency is the one with the silicone ends that doesnt seem to have an fitment issue and is half the price. |

Seriously, you pay $600 to have to put electrical tape on it to create a seal? That's weak! They should have just tapered the CF mold down at that end to make the fit exact instead of going with a band aid solution like that. You'll probably end up replacing the tape in 2 years.

Not sure what the big deal is - I put the tape as it acts as a dust barrier, for me the charge pipe went on fairly easily with a bit of patience and I have a very nice snug fit. Well worth it to me in my opinion but to each their own.

CF is obviously not as flexible as the OEM plastic so you can't just use a clamp to squeeze it down and make a seal. What they could have done is created a small groove at the end of the piece and have some kind of rubberized seal or maybe an o-ring that would allow the clamp to compress the rubber seal a little bit and create an airtight junction. This same method is used on lots of cars that use MAF sensors. The MAF sensor housing is typically a very hard plastic so they have o-rings on each end that create a seal with the intake plumbing. The o-rings sits in a small groove that keeps the o-rings seated and not get pushed out of position when the housing and intake plumbing are pushed together.

ITS NOT TO SEAL air out. its so the unit can fit snuggly once the clamp is tied down.
also instead of wrapping it around in 1 long strip i just cut several strips and taped it all down. entire install took less than 20 min, worst part as i mentioned was figuring how to get the charger in as it doesn't flex.

The big deal is paying 700 for something that you kinda have to ghetto rig a little bit. Did they not take fitment and a good seal on both ends of the charge pipe into consideration? Pretty retarded if they didn't. Again, overall, the piece is pretty nice and I definitely felt some performance gains as well. Before the charge pipe I only had BMC air filter and fabspeed X-pipe and barely noticed the performance increase. With the charge pipe I definitely noticed the increased power in the low rpm range. Hmmm....no sponsors chiming in??? Where's the Technocraft reps to justify the fitment issues? |

To Clarify the Electric Tape Seal Design:
The supplied Super 3M Electrical Tape is used as a lubricating dust shield for ChargePipe installation. Electrical tape will need to be wrapped around the lip section between 3-4 revolutions, layered enough to make a lubricating seal between the ENVY™ ChargePipe carbon fiber and the OEM plastic adapter midsection. It's purposely designed this way due to for easy installation and un-installation and also want to make this charge pipe stay away from issues from the possible failure connector on both ends. Hope this help. =) |
