What can I use to smooth out the shifter?
After 5K miles my shifter is still pretty notchy especially in 1st to 2nd, what is out there lube wise to lessen this?

Mine is breaking in nicely, and am hoping it gets the way I want it (I don't expect miracles; just a tad better), but if not, the only thing we can do is to change the fluid. I changed the fluid on my new Accord 6MT and made a big difference (especially when cold), which is the same identical problem I have with my M3. Both cars (BMW and Honda) use the same special Redline MTL fluid. It shouldn't void our warranty since it meets or exceeds BMW's specifications, but since BMW is paying for maintenance, they'd have a much stronger argument if we had an unrelated warranty problem later on, so I'm not eager to try that. Other than that, there's nothing we can do man. If you try it, please let us know. If it makes a difference, I'd definitely do it. Plus we can always put BMW fluid back in if no difference.
Honda's oil was a lot thicker than MTL, but it didn't occur to me to hang around when I took my car for the 1,200 service to check out our tranny fluid to determine if it'd be worth trying. My Honda shifter is the best I've had, and MTL made it perfect; besides the lack of notchiness, shifts feel super crisp, and gears just snick into place. I don't think the BMW sihfter will ever match it (since gears don't really snick into place), but it should be pretty close once the notchiness is gone IMO. Keep us posted on what you do, and good luck. |

I've heard that the 1-2 shift will always be the notchy area, but it gets better after a while. Since you have 5k miles on the clock, it should've been reduced by now. Changing the tranny fluid would be the best bet, but I wouldn't know which one to recommend to you. I believe the notchiness will always be part of the Getrag tranny. |

Yeah, I am a little disappointed with the shifter on the M3, I think Redline is supposed to be good.

Yeah this trans. has some very notchy shifting, my e46 M3 was the same. I must say this is one of BMWs weak point, the manual transmissions on M cars.

You know I was messing around. I don't get into the 30 page thread "dct vs 6mt" madness.
