VIR with First Settlers PCA

Ran on the VIR track this past weekend ( May 18-20th) with the First Settlers PCA club, a very friendly group to run with. They had a mix of all types of cars present beyond the expected Porsche's, almost a third of the total were BMW's....... Weather was great, mid 70's and sunny.

Parked next to "Doc" Nolan and his son Dave in the paddock, very friendly people I must say. Doc, ( mister "Von Zoom" ) was instructing another member "LiM3y" that weekend.

I was running in the white group ( intermediate solo) and was pretty new to the track. Here is a video of one of my early runs. I am not getting on the accelerator very fast or hard at turns yet and I need to apex later in turn 5a as I am losing time there. VIR has several tighter turns than the tracks I usually run on so adjustments need to be made by me. Overall, VIR is a very fun track to run on ( love the uphill esses and the roller coaster combination on the backside).

Passed a lot of cars, but it was just my horsepower advantage instead of skill

Nice vid, you have a video of a clean run? I want to compare it to mine to see the difference between NA vs. SC. Speaking of which, what was your oil temperature looking like? I was there a few weeks earlier and I think it was hovering around 275/ 280. Also, did you get the story behind the white e46 M3 that ate it going up the climbing esses?

Enjoyed meeting you also. Great vid with nice lines - look like a seasoned vet. Trust you made it home okay. Long drive.

Not sure what happen to the E46 at the beginning of the esses except to say hard impact with the tires - totaled car I think. Rumor an instructor was driving the students car, but cannot confirm that.

Nice to meet you, Arter! I'll post my full vids later this week. The Harry's Lap Timer vids of my best laps are below. It appears I was tormenting a light blue GT3 RS for most of Saturday and Sunday judging by my raw footage, and to make matters worse I drifted right across his nose by accident in the last session going under the bridge setting up for the Esses. Von Zoom is going to go nuts when he sees my solo videos!

After my June NJMP trip, I am going to get a flippy-flappy DCT model too! They are awesome after having ridden in one now.

Here is a short vid I made Sunday morning prior to the students taking the track. I try and do this every session just to make sure that nothing has changed since the last time I was on the track.

I hope this link will work.

I have the M24 oil cooler on the car and the oil temps never got over 235F.

Thing really works...

Sorry, just learning to use the camera so I didn't have much footage.
I would say that the VT-535 is dropping me by about 3 seconds, just from the timing in the straights. The first time I was at VIR without the supercharger ( in Dec), I was running about 2:22-23 laps. This time, I was down to 2:18- 2:19, but I was really taking it easy in the corners.

Also, there were lots of slower cars around and I didn't want to be running up their tails in the turns ( this was an intermediate class ).

The S/C adds about 10-15 mph to your straight speeds ( hit 160 mph once on the back straight, but decided that 145-150 was just fine).
Really adds something to the balanced M3 design.

I really liked your videos of the Track Daze event. You are a better driver than me. I need to slide it more.

Good to meet you too. I don't think Von Zoom will have any problems with your videos. You did several corners much better than me. Get the flippy floppy DCT and you will love it on the track.

I did expect much faster Porsche's at this event than what was in my group.

At Watkins Glen, 2 weeks ago there were 7 GT3's in the A group ( where I was running with the BMW club) that were smokin' fast. I expected the same here as it was a PCA event ( although I was not running in the advanced group here).

I'm going to look into that but it is good to know that the SC doesn't impact the temps as long as you have this M24 oil cooler installed!

160 mph is very impressive! What kind of brakes do you have on it? Don't put too much weight on my videos, it was definitely not fast to slide all over the place. My goal before the weekend was to dip into the 2:10s and when I saw it wasn't happening due to the heat, I decided to turn it into a car control exercise. Turn 1 has the most run off so I would constantly push the car, getting on the throttle too hard, too early to get the rear end out. That was also the first weekend on track with DSC OFF. So, we're all students to the game.

Wow, one would assume it was something mechanical if it was the instructor driving. I will say that that was just about the spot where I got my flat tire at the TrackDaze event. Just past the bridge right about where the corner station is on the left. I reviewed the video and heard the loud pop but could not see what did it. I just got around to patching the tire and it was a huge hole, took two of those tar strips to fill it up. Think there's still a slow leak but the tires have been demoted to DD only so it should be fine.

I hated my car broke all the work done to find a dang Crank sensor was heat soaked and was cutting the ignition off!

Great video! Thanks for posting. It's nice that we're accumulating quite a library of track videos on here--it's a great reference.

VIR looks so beautiful. I wish it were closer, but I'll definitely have to make the trip someday.

Sounds like you were getting into the limiter under acceleration at around 4:55.

I have a 3-month program in place to weaken my grip and select a handbag. Then I will be ready for DCT.

You need to come down and try it. Different than most of the tracks we have up north that only have sweeping turns. In Nov. I may come down and try the Grand course which has all extra twisties that they use in the C&D Lightning track test runs.

And this is the Novice group with Track Daze..

Great car you have. Saw a 2:05 time I believe. We had one GTR running about that time in the advanced group with the PCA.
