Hit the rev limiter

My god I hit this rev limiter in 1st gear on my dct for the first time because I was so focused on watching the shift lights and forgot to shift. Car jerked a bit. Did I just do damage to something? Help

Dont think so. Your cars smarter than that, it would have shifted up if necessary. Hopefully it wasnt a cold engine. What was your oil temp?

ps. did you see the pretty lights?

That is what rev limiter is for. To protect the engine from damage. I must have hit rev limit a bazillion times on my car and still going strong.

Oh boy shift lights are cool! All I can say.

Engine temp was in middle

I would be more worried if you bounced off the redline going from 6th to 1st. But as stated earlier I think the car wouldn't let u do something like that.

One of the nice features of DCT is that it protects itself. If you attempt a downshift that would exceed the redline in the lower gear, it won't engage the lower gear. I found this out while having fun with a 430 on Allen Parkway.

Hitting the rev limiter is fine so no need to worry. The jerk you felt was the cut off. IMO I think it sounds pretty cool hahaha.

Funny (sad?) story though:

While shopping for a 911 a couple of years ago I had a salesman who, while "driving me to the sale", bounced off the rev limiter in a Carrera S while in second gear, with no more than 30 miles on the odometer, in freezing cold temp's......when the oil temp gauge had barely even had time to register that the car had been started.

Brand new.....dead cold engine......rev limiter bounce.....Oh.....Kay....and you wanna sell me this car?

......NOT.

Brutal.

Salesman: "But they break them in at the factory so it's

!!"

I just asked him to turn around so we could look at another car.

What I don't like is the "hard" limit...it just jerks the car out from under you, almost like jamming on the brakes! It's very disconcerting!! Some cars are fitted with a "soft" limiter that just gradually slows you down...much nicer.

I've hit the rev limiter a few times now, and on two occasions the variable tach decreased my rev limit to ~6500-7000. It had me pretty worried. Anyone else have that happen when you hit rev limit?

possible stupid question ahead --- so when someone mentions overrevving (sp?), is that only applicable in the 6MT?

Yes, as the only way to do that is with a mechanical overrev, which means shifting to a lower gear (by accident) rather than a higher one, with the engine at or close to redline, forcing the engine over redline. Like missing the gate and shifting to 3rd rather than 5th while at redline in 4th. There's nothing electronic that can prevent the engine from spinning over the redline.

If you have a DCT I've noticed the rev limiter is dependent on the setting. For instance, in S1 it is a very soft rev limit, it just feels like the motor quits, in S6 it bounces and the variable tach kicks in and drops the max RPM

Yes there's a good chance you damaged the torque converter and possibly chipped a gear and put metal shaving in the automatic trasmission fluid or damaged the electronic diff. Just go to the dealer and ask them to get your torque converter and e-diff checked out.

The M3 has a Hendrix style rev limiter which is designed to be used by people who know what they are doing, it's very easy to overrev it (the M3 is a real driver's car and all).

The car should never jerk hard like that again. Definitly keep it below 2000 rpm for the rest of the month.

No problem at all. You will not damage the car.

I have done it a few times in 1st gear myself until I realized that sometimes, the tach doesnt keep up with the true RPMs. My tach would show 8-8200 and I could feel it kissing the limiter.

I've just come to grips with the fact that if I'm manually shifting from a dead stop, I hit the paddle ~500 RPMs before the redline in 1st.
