Can I cancel my order if....

...if it hasn't left the port yet but finished production? I'm having cold feet on getting the dct tranny. I'm a 6mt at heart but was very intrigued by the trickness of the dct, so I pulled the trigger. Now my doubts are getting the best of me and want to know if it's possible to cancel my order now. If not, then is does anyone want to take my spot? Here are the specs:

2011.5 e92 m3
Space gray w/ ext fox red lthr
Carbon roof and trim
M-dct
Pp2
Conv pkg
Comp pkg
Heated seats

It's expected to arrive around mid to late October.
I'm going to test drive both tomorrow again and know for sure what I want.

Technically you CAN cancel your order. But I think its in poor form. You should have educated yourself thoroughly enough before placing your order. Don't make someone else be the insurer of your mistakes/uncertainty.

Important note: did you place a deposit on this car? and did you sign any paperwork prior to placing this order?

that said, if you are spending ~$70k, make sure the car is what you want. If you decide you want the 6mt instead, don't settle for the DCT b/c the dealership already ordered the car for you. If you don't purchase that car, the dealership will find another buyer for it.

How is pulling a paddle more fun than using both your feet while you row through gears? I may find the funof it being faster, but in my opinion that would wear out and start getting boring, plus if you're planning on keeping the car, and the DCT breaks, it will be much more expensive probably, but I don't want to turn this into a dct vs manual argument. If you already ordered the car you can cancel it but as others said you would lose the deposit. I would not be very sure of what to do either if that were happening to me, so I would speak with the dealer to see how difficult it is for them to have it, I bet it won't be difficult though, as the mayority of the cars ordered are pretty loaded as yours is. The other thing is that if you order the 6MT you'll have to wait again for it to be made.

It's one thing to say DCT is faster and better performing. It's completely another to say it's more fun. You sound like someone who doesn't know how to drive a manual.

I did put a deposit down but hopefully he can put it towards the next purchase. The down side to this contemplation is the friggin wait. This last month was painful enough and it was only half way. It's like waiting for a BMW individual car- except it's not...haha. What to do, what to do...

Like you said, test drive them both again. Preferably back to back if possible.

Get what you want. They should be able to sell your car without much fuss, and if you order a replacement from the same place... gosh maybe for $500 more... talk to your CA.

wait won't be so bad, the factory closed in august/no production...production is in full swing now...so if you speak with you CA perhaps he can push your second (hopefully) final order thru by changing one of their allotted slots for the month...get 'er done...

The E9X M3 6MT is not a fun gearbox (in terms of other comparative manual gearboxes). Stick with the DCT.

exactly...you'll still take delivery before x-mas if you get it in now...

in regards to manual vs dct...it's personal preference...it's what you think is better for you

TRUUUUST ME on this one dude. You'll fall in love with the M-DCT! Shifts superfast, when your in a i.e parkingstructure and half gas first gear and shift to second it just pops in gear right away and in the parking structure you can really hear the F1 sound between the shifts and thats a sound the 6MT wont be even close to making....and on the road, well for me coming from a STI the DCT threw me of completely of getting the 6MT so i went for DCT and havnt looked back since. But i do admit 6MT is fun too but if I could make a decision today I'd probably choose DCT, honestly. It is not even close to a automatic, its a whole different feeling.

every car ive owned prior has been a manual, DCT is on another level

I've had MT since I learned to drive, but after driving a buddies DCT...I knew instantly that's what I was getting.

I had a 08 M3 for the last two years with a manual and just recently traded it in for an 11 with the dct.

So far I'm enjoying the dct immensely and don't regret it at all like I thought I might. It's just as fun to me to shift with the paddles as it was shifting with the manual. It does take some of the thought out of driving the car though..

Relax chief, no paperwork was signed and what are you a robot? Yes I made a decision and went back on it, so sue me. That's life. Plus, I only test drove the DCT at the time and was in a bit of a rush to order. Now whatever decision I make, at least I won't have to live with any regrets.

If you didn't sign any paperwork or put a deposit down, I'd say your okay to walk on it. But, don't expect your dealership to be very helpful with your future purchases.

As for the usual 6MT vs. DCT argument (which will never be settled)... The 6MT is more fun, you're more in-touch with the car, I would hate to see what the post-warranty repair costs would be on a DCT, and BMW's 6MT should have been a lot better. The DCT performs better, that's been proven, and it's neat as heck.

Do I wish I had gotten the DCT? Yes. Am I happy with the 6MT? Yes, shifting is fun as hell, you challenge yourself to find the right shift points, and get a big grin when you get on an interstate and run through the gear changes perfectly, you're DRIVING. Daily driver or track car, I'd get a DCT... Fun car (the M3 is supposed to be FUN remember!) 6MT.

It's good when you downshift, go around someone, and then shift up...All smoothly... And your passenger mutters "nice".

Get the clutch stop and weighted knob.

I am a manual trans guy, drag raced auto cars for a lot of years but all my 'fun' street cars were manual trans, so of course I did the 6MT for this one.

If I were to do it again I would probably go with the DCT, these cars dont have a ton of low end grunt and this is the first car I have stalled taking off from a stoplight on a steep hill in years. The clutch is pretty touchy, not to mention the inability to downshift it into first unless you are going under 10mph or double clutch it, which is tough when go around a 120 degree blind turn that turns into a 40 degree uphill, 2nd gear just doesnt cut it when you exit going 10-15mph. On a racetrack where you know that will happen its not a big deal but on an unknown road its a different story. And there are a lot of roads around here like that.

Its not that I'm anti-6MT, its just this particular car/trans combo could be a bit better IMO. I dont think you will be disappointed with the DCT (or the 6MT), I had my choice of almost identical cars with DCT or 6MT and I went with the manual because it give me something to do when driving. I have had a lot of cars and this one really takes some seat time with the 6MT to drive well, I have the time so I dont mind learning it. Some may not want the hassle.
