My 08 E92 M3 threw up some check control messages...

Hi everyone,

I think I have the idle control issue others have reported but I can't be seen by the service department until Monday. In the mean time I am gathering info. Yesterday night the car went into limp mode. See pics.

All the codes cleared this morning when I started the car again and it seems to drive ok again but I want this looked at.

What do you think it is and I have not been to the dealer since the first recall for DCT. Is there newer software and anything else to update while I'm there?

Thanks a bunch.

To fix that issue they have to update the software, so all of your modules will be brought up to the latest version. It happened to my friend Jerome's 08 DCT M3 - exactly as your picture. After they replaced some parts and reprogrammed the car it's been all good.

Thanks Mike.

Have you found E9X M3's pretty reliable? This kind of freaked me out when it happened, total shut down.

I had the same issues, intermittantly, for a couple of weeks.
Brought the car into the dealership and they changed:
- idle-air control valve
- air/oil separator for bank2

Hopefully that will correct the issue. Had no problems on the drive home from the service department.

How common is this issue and does repair usually fix it for good?

I'm curious what percentage of '08 cars have had the idle control valve issue. My problem is most cars report that problem around 15K miles, and I might not get there before warranty expires. Plus I haven't heard if the stupid valve was redesigned already, or BMW keeps using potentially bad ones.

Spoke with a tech regarding this, not very common. Pales in comparison to the the 335i hpfp issues for example.

They changed my idle actuator and after about 10k miles, no more problems.

My car just started doing this 3 days ago. First time it happend, I stopped the car, restarted, and problem did not return the rest of my 40 mile commute home. Happend yesterday about half way home.

Today, it happened right after I got out of my work parking lot. Pulled over at a rest stop, started my way home and went into limp 5 minutes later. Seems to be getting worse. I scheduled an appointment Monday at the dealership but think I will avoid driving till then. Now I can't get around the block without it going into limp mode.

They are somewhat reliable. I have a long service history on mine, that's for sure. Electrical issues, door lock issues, comfort access issues, suspension noise, to name a few of many.

In terms of engine / transmission / driveline, I think it's a solid vehicle. There are a ton of other issues that have surfaced. The second gear grind really bothers me on high RPM shifts. With DCT this won't be an issue, but then we're talking about an entirely new ballgame. SMG is more proven I think.

I don't think we can make a definitive statement one way or the other at this point. We'll have to make that assessment as the cars accumulate more miles.
