Predictions on the M3's 0-60 performance?
Say, pit it against the current 996 Turbo...
The current 996's weight is 3480 lbs. with 415 bhp, 0-60 in 4.1 secs. So my shoot-from-the-hip guess is Bangle's M3 would probably weigh around 300 lbs. lighter (guessing based on the 330i's weight of 3362 lbs. and the amount of CFRP the M3 will probably utilize). And with 400 bhp, this could come close, but not beat, the 0-60 of the 996 since it's 4WD and the M3 most likely won't be. My prediction on the 0-60: somewhere between 4.1 and 4.4 seconds. Anybody has a different prediction? Anybody more of a nerd than I am?

First, about the styling of the new M3. I took a trip to NYC for the long weekend and to check out the car at the auto show. After seeing the M5 in person, I'm confident BMW will make the M3 an awesome car, styling wise, assuming they stick to what they did with the M5, which hopefully means they'll build something close to this
On the performance, since the E46 M3 already does 4.8 seconds, it's safe to say the E90 will outperform this with a better power-weight ratio, but by how much like you ask? My prediction is 4.4-4.5 seconds. BUt, that's a "shoot-from-the-hip" guess like you |

well heres my .02cents:
the next M3 will almost for sure be modelled after the E46 M3 CSL and the M6. BMW has been experimenting with light-weight materials, and will push the enevelope even farther with the E90M3, thats for sure. They've already perfected the use of those new smc ultra light bumpers which will be on the E90. They will almost for sure have a lightweight CF roof section. The big question is willl they have the guts to put the superlightweight hood/front fender/trunk sections in? Or just put in a relatively lightweigh aluminum piece like on the E46m3. With all this combined, I can bet you the next M3 will be lighter then the E46m3, even with the larger (but not much heavier) V8 derived from the M5/M6 V10 in it. SO the car will be a bit lighter, with a whole lot more power, and more importantly more TORQUE. the extra torque is really going to kick the 0-60 time down a good amount.. I honestly believe the competition is going to have something to worry about again with the next M3, just because of the brand new engine BMW commited too and the long term comitment BMW has to the use of lightweight materials. They've already tooled up their factories for large volume production of the smc body parts. lets look at the e46m3 for an example the stock M3 weighs : 3400lbs.. the M3 CSL weighs... 3050lbs.. thats a nice chunk of weight savings the stock M3 has : 340hp the M3 CSL has : 360hp now that extra power + weight savings translates to this change in 0-60 time: stock M3 : 5.1secs M3 CSL : 4.8 seconds thats not bad, I'm going to make a blind guess and say that a stock E90M3 with all the electronic gizmos will weigh in at about 3200lbs and will make 400hp with 320ft.lbs of torque. This should all translate to a 0-60 time of about 4.6-4.8seconds would be my guess. |

Good 2¢, Mark. I think I need another cold shower. All this talk about weight savings and how M6 technology is merely paving the way for the next M3 is making my pants tight.

Im guessing the m3 will be 50-100 pounds lighter and the 0-60 performance will be under 4.9 seconds but greater than 4.3..

I doubt BMW will make the M3 faster in the sprint to 62mph than the M5, more so the M6, it just wouldn't make sense to buy a huge coupe like the M6 and have it squatted by a (seemingly inferior) coupe, that's probably going to be half the price...
Having said that, it will probably hit 62mph at around 4.8-5.0 seconds, just ahead of the Audi S4, but not defeating the 4.6 (M6) and 4.7 (M5) |

I say that they can make it faster than the M5 because they are two different cars. I think that BMW will make the M3 more of a racer. The M5 and M6 are more of a grand tourer (GT) car.

My scientific interpretation of every bit of speculation that I have read lead me to the inescapable conclusion that everyone else is wrong and that I am right: BMW M3 will accelerate in 4.6 seconds to 100 km per hour.............................................. ..in reverse!!!
