They seem dumb but I don't blame the companies for putting them there. Most Americans can't even find their state on a map. I literally watched my dad explain to one of his 35 year old employees why it gets dark outside with an orange and a golf ball once.

Where I completely and enthusiastically agree with the first paragraph, I feel the second is not one of those cases. Originally I thought the same until reading the case details and learning the truth.
