march 15th at pacific raceways

went down to pacific raceways today for the first lapping day of the season. some really nice vehicles there again. had a decent day and was on my new set up vmr 710's and yoko advan ad08's in a square set up. worked nicely less understeer but did get more oversteer. towards the end of the day got a little tail happy and dropped a wheel and may have bent a rim already. saw 140 plus by turn 1 several times indicated so 130ish. fun day overall just work on lines and hitting those damn apexes. was impressed with the power of the new zr1 on the front straight no chance to hang with him under hard acceleration. the gt3rs and the c4s cab are a husband and wife team. must be nice. there was also a gt500 super snake or whatever those factory supercharged mustangs are. not that impressed with that car. also an f430, new camaro, rs4, 135s, 335s, evo's, z06's, and several other gt3's.

Sorry to hear about your wheel. That sucks. Where did you go off track?...and at what speed? Is the wheel repairable or a total loss?

this must not have been a cca event? I didn't think they let convertibles out there unless they have a roll cage inside...

i think its fixable. cant see anything. may be a suspension component as well. notice it most over 100. i think it was at 6 dropped the right rear in an oversteer. not sure of my speed at that point wasnt a hard hit at all but felt funny after that. first step is to try it out on a balancer and go from there. the event was a high speed lapping day. not any specific club event.

I've had my VMR CLS-style wheels for about 3 months now (winter set up), and I notice when I get over 80mph the wheel starts to shake a little bit...thinking it's the wheel not being balanced (maybe I lost a weight) correctly. I was going to try the same thing...get them rebalanced. I was hoping to make these 18" VMRs as my dedicated "track set" as well (swap the winter tires w/track tires). But, if I can't get rid of this wabble above 80mph, I might have to go a different direction.

Hope your fix is simple too.

took the wheel off today and its bent. its about a 3-4 inch flat spot like i hit a curb. thats the track for you i guess. i think i found a place in lynnwood that can fix it. what are the odds that eas will give me a smoking deal on a replacement wheel as a minor hit may have ruined my wheel on the first day i used it?

dropped the wheel off at seattle wheel repair over the weekend and will find out today if it can be fixed. saw the graph for the wheel and while it doesnt look too bad visually only a small flat spot it looks like the wheel is deflected inward at the hub which probably means its a loss, looking kind of egg shaped.

That's too bad...you should contact whoever sold you the wheel and see if you can work something out. I assume they are fairly new wheels...

Cast wheels are going to have relatively low ductility (with gravity cast being the worst). Buy a replacement and go forward.

Sorry about your wheel. At least its a cheap one. The only way you can fault EAS is because they gave you a tire rated at 89W which is pretty low compared to the stock 97Y at the back and 93Y at the front. 89W according to the tirerack means rated up to 580kg vs 730kg per corner in the back. This combined with the extra abuse on track, the size of the sidewall and the cast wheel, makes bending 19' rims a matter of time.

I was about to pull the trigger on a 18' VMR track setup but I opted for getting another set of stock 18' from tischer instead (yes I have 8 stockers now). Mainly because of durability concerns, I trust BBS more than VMR.

put back on my stock wheel set up and front spacers as was tired of waiting for the replacement wheel. now find out that the vmr's are back ordered for at least another month maybe 2. sucks i get new wheels for summer and end up using them once then have to go back to stock because of availabilty issues. the vmr in 19x9.5 weighs 28lbs not the 25.5 that is advertised.

why did you go w/19's for track use? I went w/18" VMR's...for track and winter...more tire choices especially in r-compounds.

I'll admit the 19's look much better than 18's...but I was willing to give up some in the looks department in order to have more tire choices. (not to mention the 18 inch tires are slightly cheaper)

yeah live and learn went with 19's because was trying to use them as my summer wheels as well as track wheels so they would look better. now thinking i should have spent the money and gotten advans or volks that offer lighter weight and higher strength.

Yea, I hear ya...the 19's do look good though.

I just took my winter 18's off yesterday and put the OEM 19's back on (w/PS2's)...boy, what a difference it makes having the summer's back on. It looks WAY better...and the performance is back too. After wearing the Blizzak perf winters for 4 months, I kind of got used to them...and forgot how much performance I was losing with them on. It sure is nice having them back on.

are the blizzaks extremely heavy or is it your wheels that slow you down with your winter/track setup?

Dawgdog and I are signed up for the 4/29 track day with the Porsche club at PR, in case you can make it!

Glad you enjoyed yourself.

I have a set of VMR 18x9.5 et 22 that I used at 3 track events. No problems. More tire with 18". But when the Volks I had covetted finally became available I pulled the trigger. You might consider using your 19s as a street setup. You can pick up my 18s very cheap and I live in Seattle. Just a thought. I'm signed up for BMWCCA next Fri and I'm praying the rain will stop.
