Does a normal e9x 3 series have the same shifter ring or is the m3 a specific one?

trying to find a way to not pull apart my oem shifter.

The OEM knob and boot are worthless so its not a big deal to sacrifice the ring for a greater cause. After the F10 M5 knob is installed you will gladly burn the stock on and not think twice

by "ring" you mean the plastic frame that snaps onto your center console? The answer is No. standard 3-series cars rights are larger and simply just different shape

I must be some sort of wimp....I have tried my hardest to get the OEM knob off but it refuses to budge.

Is there any sort of technique here, or is it just a case of heaving up in the direction of the lever itself?

TIA

Just muscle power. Make sure you don't smash your face as you pull the shift knob up. It is very tight but the only way to remove it, is to pull it up. Good luck.

I just installed my F10 M5 shift knob today. Havent driven the car with it yet but it looks good. The only thing I noticed is the leather must be thicker because the tabs dont snap in but it sits very well. Here are some pictures.

It is a PITA to get off. I used a small needle noise plier to pull small sections off at a time. Good luck

Changing the shifter actually makes it sportier! I didn't think it would be a huge difference but shifting is much better.

Thanks for the DIY, it helped tremendously.

Unclipping the wires was annoyingly difficult but once off I carefully removed the OEM boot from the ring by pulling with my fingers then using a razor to CAREFULLY scalp/delaminate the leather off. I didn't want to cut up the OEM leather too much in case I want to use it again, not to mention it's just bad form.

I've read how many folks here had a difficult time getting the thicker M5 leather to allow the ring to clip back down so I made sure after the OEM boot was removed the OEM ring was as clean of debris as possible by scraping away all glue and bits of leather remaining. Next I put the M5 boot on, determined and then created the location of where to place holes in M5 leather and voila! I tucked the leather under the ring (NO GLUE, NO CLIPS) and snapped it in. Took me 2 hours while in conversation with my 3M clear bra installer.

I highly recommend this mod. For me this also allows my elbow to rest where it should be while still keeping a hand on the shifter.

For those that did the mod, does the leather match the other leather pieces (e.g. handbrake)? I realize it's thicker, but I am concerned from the outside appearance perspective.

My uncle noticed right away, and has never been in my car...said it looked different from his 95 Avus blue e36 knob... Very pleased with this knob, wish I put it in sooner than 100k but these last 5k miles with it rock. Must do mod for us lucky 6MT owners...paddles are for the track not every day...

I can definitely recommend this mod.

As well as being aesthetically much nicer, it does genuinely improve the feel of the shift, even between 1 and 2, which is normally regarded as a weak point with this transmission.

For disconnecting the electrics I used a very small flat bladed screwdriver inserted into the locating lug.

For separating the boot from the locator ring I used a metal letter opener - thin enough to get between the plastic and the leather, strong enough to not bend and with an edge that is not too sharp, so less likely to cut through the leather by mistake.
