Can this be touched up?

So getting out of my car yesterday from work, I had my M coffee thermos in the side pocket of my bag. Somehow during my exit, the thermos flew out of the side pocket and slammed into the side of my baby. I was beyond furious and almost shattered the mug but took a couple deep breaths and calmed down.

See the below pictures. Can something like this just be touched up? Or will something more elaborate have to be done to fix this. I'm really upset because it was so preventable. It may look small but its definitely noticeable... the chip is all the way through the paint. Excuse the dirt on the tire lol

Did it chip off your paint or is it a scuff on your clear coat? If it's just clear coat than I'm sure it can be buffed out.

BTW, Those super deeps are amazing

Dr. Colorchip that bitch. Be patient, follow the directions and it'll look good as new after maybe 2 applications.

If done correctly (read: multiple layers) it won't be obvious until you're staring right at it from a few inches away.

Will this look close to OEM and hold up to washing and waxing? The video makes it look like cake...

Dr Colorchip works best for small specks and chips. This looks rather large. Don't get your hopes up. It's worth a shot if you're hesitant about a respray.

prep your car and follow the instructions. The results will look better than what you paid for the kit.

After you let it cure, you can wash, buff and wax it like it's factory paint.

The dirt on that tire annoys me more than the paint chip. Is that wrong?

To be honest with you man, I agree...

I drive through a freaking dirt pile on the side of my driveway then get out an ding the side of my car... and the car was just cleaned the day before

The longer its been since it happened, the less it bothers me, but I'm still going to order DR colorchip because I can use it for the rock chips in the front too. Ill report back to the thread once I have done it to show results.

The point of the color chip is to protect the actual metal of the part to prevent any further damage to the exposed surface, while also subtly covering up the imperfection. What people are saying is correct though: with multiple applications of the color chip you can effectively "fill" the chip with paint. Just be patient and you can achieve near perfection!

Off topic - love those rims. what kind are they exactly? (Edit - Duh, in your sig. Nice rims nonetheless!)

Good luck with the paint. I would follow the suggestions above. I wouldn't respray it, IMO.

well after finally getting some time to try dr color chip. Here are the results...
Here were my steps:
1. Cleaned area very well
2. Applied the paint to the left of the chip then smeared across the chip (did this about 4 times consecutively)
3. Allowed about 3-5 min to dry then used the SealAct to remove the excess paint around the chip
4. Lightly buffed with microfiber until paint around chip was shinny

I followed this process 3 times with about 5-8 min in between. Not very impressed with the results. Should I wait longer between coats?

leave it on for a bit longer, actually what i would do is try to fill up that hole with the doctor chip, then let it dry, then fill up more until you level out with the rest of the paint. Then apply another layer of paint and wait 10 min and lightly use the solution to buff it out, u needa level that chip out first because its big and when u apply pressure with the solution you practically scrape all of it off.

For something that big use the BMW touch up paint with a better brush. You are going to fill in the chip until there is a "blob" higher than the height of the paint and then wet sand it smooth then polish out the sanding scratches. Remember when polishing that the OEM paint around the touch up will be much stronger and if you're not careful you will remove all of the paint from the chip while polishing. I recommend letting the "blob" dry for a couple days so it can harden.

If you're not comfortable wet sanding I would take to a professional.

Dr color chip is a quick way to fill in a bunch of small chips and get so-so results.

This is a huge chip and you want it to be as good as possible so color chip is not right for this application.

OEM touch up paint all the way.

It's inevitable that as time goes by you will accumulate more and more stone chips. That's the nature of the beast.

Fill it with the OEM and put some clearcoat on top. Like others said, once you accumulate a few of those just go to a professional for wet sanding and polishing multiple ones. It will look amazingly better than colorchip anyhow.

Your goal should be to avoid any rust forming. Once you take care of that, you have all the time in the world to take it to a pro at a later date and make it look almost perfect)

Use denatured alcohol (make sure to check for a split % of ingredients-should not be more than 15% methanol I think) for cleaning the area or a bmw tree sap remover.

Get some Cotman watercolor painting brushes:

Sizes 0,00 for tiniest touchups and bigger ones for larger areas. Don't attempt to do yours with 0 or 00. It may suffice around the edges but will really create an uneven distribution if you do the whole thing with it. If you are not familiar with sizing don't order online! Go to a local art supply store and talk to the sales rep.
