I have a car shipping to me and because I'm obsessed and I haven't seen the car in person I look at the pictures like three times a day. It is immaculate but I just noticed this in the engine bay photo.

What is on the oil filter housing cap? I've never seen that. Car is 2012 E92 with 11/2011 build date.

some have that, and some don't. i believe it was a solution for an earlier iteration of the oil filter housing cap. i can't remember exactly how or why, but i think it prevents the cap from self loosening and leaking.

Huh thanks. I've seen a lot of M3 engine bays without it and googled and came up empty. Was curious if it was some aftermarket doodad.

It’s an anti rotation cap on later models. Rarely seen because it usually gets discarded by lube jockies.

It prevents the filter cap from backing off. When you get your car you have to destroy that piece because it is a useless part and if you don't you should buy a Merc! Jk but it is useless.
