Thoughts on Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 or 10W-60 oil

Anyone try these? Any thoughts? I am due for a change. I searched the forum and Pennzoil is not mentioned much! The Ultra looks impressive and BMW is switching.

Car is 2009 with 26K miles. Daily driver in all weather in the northeast. No track. Work is only several minutes away so a ton of cold start miles!

Thanks for the advice. I will be doing a Blacktone this change fwiw. No warranty as of now as well. So, stick with Castrol Edge Pro (not sure I ever had this stuff, it replaced the original TWS) or try Pennzoil in either 5W-40 or 10W-60. Or go to Mobil One 0W-40.

The huge amount of cold start miles is what has me concerned. Oil has been changed every year (5K miles) like clockwork at the dealer.

Thanks!

I don't believe BMW is switching out TWS, but rather the other BMW-branded oils (5w-30, etc.)

Why don't you walk to work or take public transit? The way you drive your car is really the worst abuse you can do to it. Repetitive cold starts and short trips. Not enough time to charge the battery. Not enough time to heat up the oils in the car and boil off any moisture or acid forming. Way too much wear and tear.

Maybe you should use German Castrol 0w30 instead given your short trips and cold starts. You need the thinnest oil you can use since the engine remains cold for most of its operating life.

Suburbs and I work in a suit. Plus I am always running late. Car is easier, to be honest. I have gym stuff in my basement for working out.

My useage is why I am thinking the 0W-40 route may be appropriate.
Appreciate the comments btw!

If there were ever a case for 0W-20 in an S65, it might be you, but I'm not advocating it .

I'd try M1 0W-40

BMW is switching to SOPUS (Shell/Pennzoil) for their private-label oil, that's all.

Pennzoil Ultra 5w40 is a great oil and is one of the only ones using their new GTL basestocks. I wouldn't hesitate to use it. It's one of the few oils that I feel can really compete with Mobil 1 0w40.

Just let it warm up longer and mix in a coffee run in the morning or something. Throw in an extra 10 min and you'd be fine

You should not be letting a car sit there to warm up. Horrible for a whole slew of reasons. Just start it up, wait a moment for the RPMs to stabilize, and drive off slowly.

Guess I should have clarified warm up, i.e use that 10 min coffee run as part of the warm up, that way the whole slew of sensors don't go to pot

I combined PU 5W-40 with Ceratec to help with cold weather startups and wear. I just replaced the oil and sent it to Blackstone for analysis, I only had in for less than 1500 miles it but I was curious to see the additives and wear. I changed to Liqui Moly 10W-60 and the car feels different...it doesn't rev up as fast as before. I will definitely go back to PU 5W-40 after a few track sessions this summer.

I read on the forum or somewhere (maybe one of the black stone reports) liquimoly is thicker than our tws counter part. I'm interested in the results on the ceratech. I've read some reviews and it seems quite promising.

Well, I am changing the oil and plugs today. Since summer is here, I am using the Edge Pro Castrol 10W-60. I'll get a Blackstone and see how things are. I can always pop in 0W-40 in the winter.

Hoping the plug swap is noticeable. Over 5 years of cold start beating on these.

Any update on the results of this analysis?

EDIT: Nevermind, realized you were the same OP from the Ceratec post. Read your response there and it seems like you didn't have any problems with the 5w-40 and Ceratec? I'll have to consider this as an option.

Ultra Euro 5w-40 is practically the same price as TWS.
