How Much Do You Think M-DCT will improve 0-60 Time
My personal prediction is about .2 seconds. and following Road and Tracks time of 4.1 it should bring it to 3.9!!!!

It all depends on the quality of the launch control and therefore obviously on whether or not the launch control in the US is identical to that in the rest of the world. BMW has been known to offer different LC systems in the US compared to elsewhere. Next the gains from DCT will depend both on the shift times and the gearing changes if any. 0.2 seconds gain is a good guess if LC works really well. The 4.1 number seems too fast for the cars weight, power and gearing, so I'd say that number is sort of an outlier. That being said since we saw it, it is also likely an outlier number for M-DCT could be 3.XY.
Last do search around on the forum - this has been discussed ad infinitum. Use google to search the forum rather than the built in search feature just add site:m3post.com to any google search. |

I think it could allow most drivers to more consistently achieve good 0-60 times but I don't see how it will be any faster to 60 than a seasoned driver with a true manual. I think the average driver would be faster to 60 in the M-DCT but that advantage moves closer to zero with above average drivers. I think 0-100 and up could favor the M-DCT when you have more shifts added in, and on the racetrack I would expect the M-DCT to really shine. Since both will be available by the time I place my order, I'll probably take a spin in one and see if I like it.

You might be able to get 4.1sec 0-60 every 10th time you tried. However, with MDCT you will be able to do it everytime... thats a real advantage even if the best 0-60 doesnt go down!

@RandyB and JEllis: Again it STRONGLY depends on the capability of the launch control. If they nail LC and optimize gear ratios there will be no besting the DCT by a driver of any skill level, period. Big "ifs" but a "period" indeed.

I agree. 0-60 is mostly bragging rights. Although the ability of a car to launch, modulate traction and accelerate from a dead stop is a good test of a huge number of systems in a car; tires, chassis, clutch, engine, suspension, launch control (if present), etc. One thing to realize, gains in time to a particular speed will increase and decrease (always being ahead but it fluctuates) compared to the MT based on where each cars shifts. However, the gains in distance that one is ahead of the other will simply increase and increase, it will fluctuate as well, but the lead will seem more impressive than the 0-speed X times. Again as I've said many times this is all totally continegent on quality of LC and gear ration optimization in the M-DCT. |
