why are the cabin air filters so expensive!

i've searched everywhere and prices for the cabin air filters are all in the $100 range.
Our car takes 4 filters so they are sold as a set of 4.

I hope some 3rd party comes in with a cheaper replacement.

I need to replace mine too (it's due). Is it $100 for the set of 4?

yes. a full replacement will need 4 filters which cost, depending on where you look, about $100. they are sold as a set of 4

ok did some research and it looks like ATP CF233 or ATP RA82 are direct fits for our car. prices on amazon are very reasonable too.
CF233-$26
RA82-$32

ARe these priced as "each"? Single filter? I found individually for less, but it's as one filter:

I checked with ATP and the filters CF233 and RA82 are sold INDIVIDUALLY. so since our car needs 4 filters, we're back to over $100 for a complete set.

Kinda pricey, but roughly once a year so in that regard, not that bad.

Annoying thing though is that in a regular 3 series, it's a $30 part.

Curious, what's the downside of not changing this once a year? Poor/stagnant smell coming through A/C vents? Poor ventilation/airflow? Reduced life on cabin heating/AC system?

In theory. In practice the downside is probably reduced filtration of stank, they have carbon in them which has a limited useful life

A/C stank comes from the evaporator core already inside the car. The best way to alleviate that is to turn off the A/C button a few minutes before you turn the car off so as to dry it out.

Tell me--did our heroes James Dean, Steve McQueen, or Jake and Elwood Blues worry about stank coming through the HVAC system of their performance cars? I think not!

i use this to spray the evaporator core to kill mold/fungus. Its basically a mixture of bleach, ammonia and alcohol. Works very well

highly technical.

but Rich is right, if you drive your car in a metro area like DC here, you will notice a difference in cabin air quality. I often find myself stuck behind stinky old cars, country-boy modified diesel trucks, and delivery trucks. I turn the vents to Auto recirculate and it detects the "stank" particles and immediately turns the outside vents off, and allows the filter to do the work.

Does anyone have a DIY or photo on where the 4 slots are to do the change? I'm assuming it's the same location as other E9X cars, here are some E9X DIYs:

FACK!

Check out the E90 post links i posted, a few guys say the "Mann" brand are also the same BMW OEM lines

IMO, if your original filter is dirty enough, changing it to the standard E9X filters (if it'll fit, and assuming it's of lower quality than the M3 filters) will probably be better than using a dirty filter.

e9x M3 have different filters and filter locations compared with a regular e9x 3 series

here's a picture of where they are-2 on each side
