Should I? 2011 E90 M3 12k km Straight Trade -> New 2011 CTS-V Wagon 6MT

Missed out on a Black Raven 2011 CTS-V Sedan 6MT last August so took delivery of my 2011 E90 M3 M-DCT. Still check Autotrader here and there to see if a 6MT V pops up somewhere....

...found one, brand new, 15km on the clock and warranty starts the day someone buys it, leftover 2011(!?) Crystal Red CTS-V Wagon, fully loaded (so does have suede steering wheel and shift knob and Recaros) and 6MT.

MSRP $81k CDN, listed at $69k CDN. Went to the dealership to talk, and was offered $66k for my trade (12k km mileage on the M3 now). Put down the deposit, got the financing squared away, but then took a LOT of FLAK from friends and family, so I backed off.

3 weeks later, they now list the car at $66k. So, would have been straight-trade now. Here's how the deal might look like:

- $66k trade for $66k = no additional sales tax to be paid as per our Provincial Law

- I owe BMW $58k for 4 years 4 months @ 3.9% rate so $1220 / month, with 3 years 4 months warranty and maintenance left

- Since both vehicles have the same value, I will be financing the $58k with GM instead, and I think I'll go for 4 years @ 4.9% rate so $1300 / month, with 4 years of full warranty and maintenance + 5 years powertrain warranty

- Since my location is positively CRAWLING with young folks driving E9x M3s, by switching I will be saving $300 PER YEAR on insurance and registration

- Everything is coming out of my own pocket, same as my previous BMWs

It IS a Wagon, and not German, so I've gained NO APPROVAL from most of my non-car-knowing friends and families. I'm personally ok with it... would prefer a Sedan but short of factory ordering one ($81k) there shall be none to take. Still, I'm wondering if I should just say "screw you" to all the doubters and just go for it.....

...is that car worth being a pariah amongst your friends and families...?

The car in question. Brought my folks to see it and my mom got so mad from me putting in a deposit that she refused to speak to me until I got the money back.

Press photo, car looks the same.

Everyone around me says the rear is butt-ugly....

vs.

Veritable,

You've been wanting that CTV-S for a long time now...

It's really a tough call.

Are you sure you're going to want the wagon? Do you really want *that* car or is it just the excitement of being able to do a "straight trade"?

If you're stopped at a light, and another black raven CTS-V stops next to you, are you going to say........ "If I had only ordered one....."

If you really want it, I say go for it. But like the M3, it's not chump change. Make sure you get exactly what you want....

And make sure you test drive it!

While the styling is controversial, I love it and would definitely recommend it especially if you have to haul things or drive multiple people around. Just be prepared to have to make some sacrifices for the increase of space through a much heavier and less agile car. I have yet to drive a V but its weight can definitely be felt and its steering isn't as telepathic as the M3's, nor is it as tossable. But that thing is a HP monster.

yep. Its a very capable car. If you read the comparos, they actually say the CTSV has a very "alive" steering feel. They compare it to porsche

This is a tough one.

I think the CTS-V wagon looks really good for a wagon and it is rare. If I NEEDED the extra space the wagon affords then I think it would be something to strongly consider. On the other hand if I didn't need the extra space I would have a hard time giving up a clean E90 M3 because it is such a great all around car. I would rather have the lighter, more agile, chassis over the extra power of the V just because it is hard to exploit that kind of power on public roads.

If the V is more to your liking then I say go for it. You are the one paying for it and driving it so you should get what you want.

I would never do it but thats me. I am not a fan of wagons/avants or American cars in general. You currently own one of the most respected and lusted vehicles on the road. Keep the M.

if you love it, do it. imho, once you get past the initial thrill, you will miss the bmw as it is a better car and will drive better than the caddy. the caddy is fast and cool, but id stay with the m3.

it's a monster car, but I would still hold out for the sedan. What's wrong with the M3?

UGLYYYY, red to boot, and a wagon.

Not to mention its going to depreciate the second you drive it off a lot. No wonder it hasnt sold. Its hideous. Black and White I could consider the 4 door... but not a wagon.

I disapprove of your potential purchase, but more so your decision making process. Please report back if you decide to purchase that red wagon so we can partake in ridiculing you along side your friends and family.

I brought my parents over to live in my house so they can retire and not having to pay household expenses. In exchange I get a couple more hands to help out around the house (including house / cat sitting when I'm away on road trips) and I save quite a bit on food by eating at home.

I know it's my house, my car, my expenses, my money; but we're living under the same roof so I wanted it to be a family decision, y'dig? Just that it's gotten to a point that I'm thinking of just going for it and stop trying to convince them.

I'm 31, btw, thanks for asking.

If you can slap an ESS-575 kit onto your M3, without spending a dime, and get a fresh 5 years powertrain warranty to boot, would you do it? That is how I'm kinda viewing the situation here.

Downside is, you have to drive a Cadillac. I know, terrible....

Julie is my CTS-V therapist The only reason why I'm considering it is because I wouldn't have to spend any extra money. I just don't think my "dream car" is worth essentially $15k more; why don't I just mod the M instead?

Opulent Blue Metallic with Satin Black wheels and yellow Brembo calipers please! I bet you I wouldn't see one on the street, EVER. Whereas, when I came into work a couple days ago, the public lot had 4x E9x M3s... one AW/FR E92 right in front of me, my co-worker's AW/Blk E92, a wrapped blue E92, and mine. Ugh.

Besides, even if I DO see one, I bet you it's 6AT. We have 5 local dealers authorized to sell Cadillacs, and throughout MY2012 they had ZERO 6MTs in stock.
