New here post! :)

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself and say soon I will be an owner of a 2009 AW/black DCT e92 M3. I posted what I'm looking at here in the M3 pricing/ordering section (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=314546) and just wanted to ask some basic questions here. My friends have M cars and I know about the break in. The car I'm looking at is brand new from Princeton BMW but has 200 miles from test drives and such on there. When I took my test drive I was never told to keep it below 4k rpms or such. I've heard that people have been able to do LCs and red line shifts while test driving cars and if this has been done on this M3 then the break in procedure has been ruined. However I've also been told that when people do European delivery that this is still often the case with people taking their new M to the ring or autobahn and not following break in procedure. All in all will this prove to be problematic in the future? If I do acquire the car now, 200 miles in and follow break in procedures from here on out will that be sufficient? Thanks!

Oh and I know posts are worthless without pics so here's my current car which I will be trading in for the M3.

Given the choice I would (and did for the most part) follow break-in procedure. I honestly don't think you will see any significant problems due to the previous test drives. If you do a search, you will find a couple of threads where folks talk about their break-in procedures. Many people never follow a limited rpm break-in.

I think you'll be ok with that M3 you're looking at, since I feel that even if the break-in isn't followed, the M3 is still a very strong machine that is built to last.

I'm very confident that the one you're looking at has been redlined at least a few times. That may or may not be a deal breaker for somebody, but I'm sure that most everyone would love to own an M3 that has been properly broken-in.

Me personally, I followed the break-in on my M3 up to 1k miles, and then all of a sudden I couldn't hold myself back anymore.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention: Welcome to M3POST!

Welcome.

The slight abuse that could happen in 200-miles is minor and shouldn't invalidate your warranty. If you drive it and everything feels ok, it likely is ok.

Don't worry about the 200 miles. Chances are what was done to the car for those 200 miles was better than someone driving on the Interstate for 200 miles at a constant speed.

Hey man, welcome to the forum! I did the ED thing, and I went to the Ring, but not until after I paid to have the break in service done. 500 euro I'll never get back... When I test drove the demo, I redlined it, and like you, I was never told not to, so who knows? The M3 is a seriously built car so it should be fine, but I would ask the dealer if they are willing to stand behind any issues that arise with the tester car. Probably not a big deal and I hvaen't heard of anyone having engine issues except for one guy with a SC.
