And your 'assuming' the 5.0 can "easily get to 160+" with the limiter. I know my M3 can get to 170-ish with the "limiter." I've done it. You know what happens when you assume.... And funny how a bigger engine with more torque still can't beat the M3. Hang with it, sure, but beat it, no. Kind of sad.

M3 lost in drag racing to a 5.0L V8 with more HP and TQ, really? Wow, I'm stunned.
I think all the mustang fan boys forget that the new M3 contain a much smaller engine and has much less tq - two huge factors when it comes to drag racing. Either way, Mustangs own drag racing, the engines have pleny of power - can't really dispute that. |

Why is this assumption so far off? If a 4.0L V8 can reach 170, why is it so difficult for a 5.0V8 with similar hp and torque to reach 170? I agree with most of it, except the sad part.

OP meant stock 5.0L GT, and not the performance variant (BOSS 302). He didn't mean BASE Mustang, which would be the 6 cylinder. Either way, the 5.0 is a pretty impressive performance car for the price.

Even if about even on the dragstrip, the Mustang will be faster in many street encounters due to its superior torque. The M3 won't always get the chance to be above 4000 rpm and to wind out to 8300 rpm.

Unless I am wrong somehow, "Stock" means as it came from the factory with no modifications from the cars as delivered specifications.
The M3 is stock and the Mustang 5.0 is stock by definition. Neither of these cars are the base model in their respective line-up. In fact, the M3 is BMWs top 3 series where the 5.0 is a step down from the top of the line Shelby GT500 in the Mustang series. I expect a better comparison would be the Boss 302LS which was built for racing on a track that has turns on it. I give Ford credit for doing cool things and the new Mustang is very cool especially the Boss 302. Those are the facts.........Steve

The Mustang in 5th gear @ 7k rpm is at 145mph, at 146mph the car is at 4600rpm in 6th gear. With the speed limiter removed several people on other boards have gone beyond 160mph in the Mustang.

Who really cares all that much about speed? Who "drag races" an M3? Certainly not me. I bought mine for the fit/finish, the looks, the feel of the car on the road, etc. All of the things that german sports sedans are supposed to be. Frankly, IMHO, comparing an M3 to a Mustang is akin to comparing a filet mignon with ground beef...yeah, they're both from cows, but they serve two different segments of society.
To me open the door of a 'stang and sit inside where it really counts.... American made car, designed at a "price point" for the masses. I'll take german engineering and quality (and eyeball appeal) anyday. Last edited by cole328; 03-17-2011 at 03:43 PM.. |

I respect Ford and the new mustang, but for all the time they spent doing the quarter mile over and over again, they could've maybe shown the two cars some corners.

Have you not been paying attention? The new 5.0 mustang is on par with an e9x m3 not just in a straight line, but around a road course as well.

If your going to compare price at least be consistent! Base 2011 5.0 mustang $30500 msrp and base 2011 m3 is $55500 msrp. No big deal just sayin
