KW V3 Dampening Question

So after installing my KW V3, when I push the push the car on full throttle I feel like my steering wheel is floating due to the tq and power in the rear. If I stiffen up my damper on the rear, will this help make the steering wheel feel more planted? This float feeling is not good. It feels like it's hydroplaning on water.

Yes.

What settings are you using? Are you using KWs recommended setting? If not, I would start there first. KWs recommended setting is usually on the stiffer side of things. Its a PITA no doubt though. Changing them over and over until you find the spot you like. And not being able to get to the compression and rebound easily sucks too. Good luck man!

I'm confused how to set their suggested setting. I'm playing with the dampening and it's getting better. Seattle's weather sucks to try and tune cars.

Firstly make sure you have the ride height set correctly

If the fronts are much higher than the rears you will have more weight distributed rear

Corner weights are best to get this right but rule of thumb is 1 finger clearance front tires to fender and slightly lower clearance on the rears as the fender sites higher

This gives best feel of balance

I just fitted KWV3 on my new E90 and settings are

Front

C three clicks out from full hard
R 6 clicks out from full

Rears

C 6 clicks out from full tight/in
R 7 clicks out

What is (C) and (R) that you are stating? I hope my ride height is even. I feel like my front should be dropped more or something.

I just realized that we can adjust the Bump/Compression and Rebound... The whole time was messing with the rebound...

Thank you SOOOO much for this information! This setup feels sooooo much better. I didn't even know there were two different adjustments!

Pleasure bro I also couldn't find anything to assist. Ride height is a function vs aesthetic thing and a corner weight set up will fix any misconception of what is right

Your floating sensation was probably because the rebound was set too soft

The KW instruction manual (which I found yesterday)

says

Front

Reb 6 clicks out Comp one full turn out (around 6 clicks)

Rear

Reb 9 clicks out Comp one full turn out (6 clicks)

I prefer it a little harder hence my settings

I actually set the fronts to C 4 clicks out and feels a little better, not so jarring on fast bumps/imperfections in the road

I'm going to give the 4 c a try.

I just set mine at

Front

C5
R5

Rear

C6
R7

This is close to factory suggestion only slightly harder on fronts (1 each) and on rears 2 harder on R

Found mine a little tight on rear and lost a bit of traction. Hold on... That's the SC lol .

No seriously I think these settings are the right set up

Remember ride height is easiest to work out by using one finger gap front tyre to fender and 1/2 finger rear tire/fender gap. You should be pretty well balanced on that

My previous E92 was corner weighted and if you look at my pious threads of COTM aug or sept 2010 you can see the ride heights

We should call this the Bob and Bapesta thread lol

I'm about to start playing around with this. I feel like it's a bit squishy on hard launches and it also has a rocking sensation when going over sequential bumps.

Cool. I'll try it this weekend. I also want to raise the rear a little to see if it eliminates the rubbing. I want to keep the 295's. Also, what kind of tire pressure are you running?

Yeah, raise the car first. I rolled my fenders and ended up paying close to 1000 to get everything fixed because of the crack paint. I believe my pressure is at 44?

Alright, finally got around to some trial & error runs. Took the trunk liner out for a couple of hours yesterday (which is a b*tch to put back in) and made some minute adjustments.

Settled on this for now and it feels pretty comfortable without sacrificing responsiveness. I do, however, still have this vibrating sound coming up through the dash when I go over brick roads and some sharp bumps. It annoys the sh*t out of me. Any thoughts on that?

Bump
  • Front - 9
  • Rear - 9

Rebound
  • Front - 6
  • Rear - 9
